HP FanFiction
From Fan History Wiki
HP_FanFiction is a Harry Potter mailing list.
[edit] Mailing list timeline
- By October 2000, Heidi started writing her own fan fiction, [1] She posted her stories to HP_FanFiction and FanFiction.Net. Her stories would later be posted to HP_Paradise.
- Late November 2000 heralded the first contact that Cassandra Claire had with Sinead, one of Cassandra Claire's alleged stalkers. This took place on HP_FanFiction in a discussion involving feedback. [2] In response to Cassandra Claire's post, Heidi8 made her probable first post to the list. [3] (The word probable is used here because some messages have been deleted from the community.) This demonstrates the close relationship between Heidi and Cassandra Claire as Heidi's first message to HP_FanFiction is a response to Cassandra Claire.
- December 2000 ended with Cassandra Claire implying on HP_FanFiction that her story might become a slash story. [4] The following extract gives that clue:
- * Cassie ponders about where to fit a / into DS.* My favorite pairing
- after Harry/Draco (which I really can't make work) is Remus/Sirius,
- and Sirius needs to marry Narcissa so H&D can stay related, and
- anyway, Remus has been turned, possibly permanently, into a big wolf.
- That leaves Ron, I guess, available for.....um.....well, we'll see.
- grins* The Ron/Draco knife-throwing scene I believe started out as a
- response to the Teenage Witches who asked for a scene with Ron and
- Draco where Draco starts taking off his clothes. They tend to ask for
- peculiar things, but then they are peculiar people. ;)[5]
Eliza Diawna Snape responded to this. Eliza Diawna Snape was a well known slash hating Harry Potter fan and was a popular writer. She was also a fan of Cassandra Claire. She expressed some concern over Cassandra Claire's e-mail as she wanted Cassandra Claire not to go the slashy route and claimed she would be offended by this. [6] Heidi would eventually respond to this note. [7][8]
- During January 2001, fan of Cassandra Claire wrote an unauthorized sequel to Cassandra Claire and Eliza Diawna Snape's stories. Neither Cassandra Claire, nor Eliza Diawna Snape were particularly pleased that a fan had done this. Various parties wanted the stories reported to FanFiction.Net so that they would be removed. As these stories were derivative, fan fic of fan fiction, and were not plagiarism, that seemed a bit tricky to do. Heidi stepped in to offer her legal advice on the situation on a post to HP_Fanfiction dated January 3, 2001. [9] Heidi starts off the post acknowledging that fan fiction is a violation of copyright and trademark because of its derivative nature. In regards to the issue of people writing fan fiction based on fan fiction, it might "sound weirdly hypocritical" [10] but that Cassandra Claire could conceivably go after the fan fiction author for violating Cassandra Claire's "common law trademark use of her name, the same way someone who went around calling himself STEVEN KlNG would be infringing on the horror writer's mark." [11] Heidi wanted to see if Xing Li might be compelled to remove the story though she thought he would not do anything about the name issue.
- On March 19, 2001, Rhysenn was busy plugging her new mailing list on such mailing lists as FFN-Slashers-Unite and hpslash. [12][13] Cassandra Claire was similarly plugging the list on mailing lists like HP_FanFiction. [14] It is also worth noting that Cassandra Claire's work, according to her plug post, definitely had slashy subtext by this time.
- On May 9, 2001, the earliest reference to Schnoogle.Com appears on HP_FanFiction in a post by Ebony. It appeared in Ebony's signature file. [15] The context of the sig is such that it is not a fan fiction archive being linked there. It is a button site. Schnoogle is not yet that fan fiction archive and it is not being indicated that it will become that archive.
- On June 8, 2001, Heidi made a post on the hpslash list which was perceived as an attempt to get slashers to join another mailing list to defend Cassandra Claire's slash writing. [16] The text of this e-mail is:
- re: OT: COMPLETLEY OUTRAGED!!!
- Punker wrote about Eliza's fanfic site:
- I am only posting this because all these things are on a public
- message board - (first, a note - Eliza is 14ish, and I don't even
- think she's online much these days because she's dealing with final
- exams, but...still....)
- Eliza has never made any secret that she is an anti-slash person -
- back around New Year's there was a long discussion on HP_Fanfiction
- about slash - people like Al, Rhysenn, Cassie, Minx and others chimed
- in on this issue, and Eliza eventually posted in response to this
- post from cassie:
- Cassie ponders about where to fit a / into DS.* My favorite pairing
- after Harry/Draco (which I really can't make work) is Remus/Sirius,
- and Sirius needs to marry Narcissa so H&D can stay related, and
- anyway, Remus has been turned, possibly permanently, into a big wolf.
- That leaves Ron, I guess, available for.....um.....well, we'll see.
- grins* The Ron/Draco knife-throwing scene I believe started out as a
- response to the Teenage Witches who asked for a scene with Ron and
- Draco where Draco starts taking off his clothes. They tend to ask for
- peculiar things, but then they are peculiar people. ;) (she also
- mentions Lucius-redemption in that post - it's an interesting little
- bit of history!)
- Eliza's response follows:

- From: "Eliza Diawna Snape"
- Date: Sat Dec 30, 2000 4:04 pm
- Subject: Re: [HP_FanFiction] Re: Draco sightings, Ron/Draco and
- Lucius M.
- >*Cassie ponders about where to fit a / into DS.
- Oh, please, Cassandra, don't do it. Trust me on this; you may think slash is
- perfectly accepted my most people, but, call me close-minded, I don't really
- care, I believe it's wrong. I'm not going to start preaching at you, and so
- far during this entire discussion I've stayed quiet about this, but if you
- add a slash, I'm going to stop reading DS, and take the story off my site.
- That's not a threat... I'm not trying to scare you into not thinking about
- it. Don't get me wrong, you can write what you like... but, even when the
- story is good, I have a very hard time getting myself to put it up. Thats
- one of the reasons you will NEVER find PoU on my site, not because I think
- its not a good story, but because of the ratings. Basically, if you add
- slash, you're going to offend a lot of people, including me.
- -Eliza, who is wondering how many people are going to start yelling at her
- for this.
- You can read a lot more on the thread by joining at
- http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HP_FanFiction/ if you want a little
- historical perspective on it. Believe me, flaming Eliza will get you
- nowhere. She thinks what she thinks - and at the moment, she's not
- changing it. Grr. However, DS is still up there, despite, well,
- hintiness in some of the more recent chapters of a ben/gareth thing.
- Oh well!
- The view at the time, on the hpslash (mailing list) mailing list, was that Heidi was trying to get people to rally to Cassandra Claire's defense and create a flame war between the slash and het contingents.
- On July 22, 2001, the Schnoogle.Com section of FictionAlley.Org opened. According to Heidi8, the site was founded by about twenty people. They included Flourish, Narri Patters, Colin, Ebony, Heidi8, Cassandra Claire, Simon, Al, Carole Estes, Mon Starling, Priscilla Spencer, Jana, Yael Pou and Viola. [17] Mon Starling and Priscilla Spencer designed the art work for the site. [18] The first registered user who was not a moderator was R. J. Anderson, [19] the author who had offered to mediate between Cassandra Claire and Pamela Dean during the plagiarism incident. Penny Linsenmayer was another early member. [20] A sample announcement, taken from the hpslash list, appears below [21] with a similar announcement appearing the next day on the HP_Fanfiction list [22]:

- On July 28, 2001, FanFiction.Net began what would be an extended downtime. This was a considerable help to the launch of FictionAlley.Org, and Heidi and others on the FictionAlley.Org staff capitalized on this downtime in their posts on HP_FanFiction. [23] These parties used the opportunity to plug FictionAlley.Org. This extended downtime continued until at least July 31, 2001. There have been rumours floated in fandom that the timing of FanFiction.Net being down coinciding with FictionAlley.Org being opened was suspicious. In an interview on AIM with Steven Savage in July 2006, he killed this rumour citing that the server had been having problems for some time because of the traffic load and additional features offered on the site. FanFiction.Net was not hacked and FictionAlley.Org had nothing to do with it. This is supported by a post made by Steven Savage at that time on fanfictionnetwriters which mentions the server problems. [24]
- FanFiction.Net continued to have more downtime in August from around the fifth to the eleventh. [25][26][27] John Walton and others related to Fiction Alley used this as an opportunity to take additional pot shots at FanFiction.Net and market their site as more reliable. [28]
- Around September 5, 2001, FanFiction.Net was still crashing repeatedly. [29] FictionAlley.Org appear like they were still trying to capitalize on this problem.
