HP Paradise
From Fan History Wiki
HP_Paradise is a Harry Potter mailing list.
[edit] Mailing List Timeline
- By October 2000, Heidi started writing her own fan fiction, [1] She posted her stories to HP_FanFiction and FanFiction.Net. Her stories would later be posted to HP_Paradise.
- One February 3, 2001, the HP_Paradise mailing list was founded. This list's volume peaked in June of 2001, with 549 posts made. The list is also known as Trouble in Paradise. This list was dedicated to the works of several big name Harry Potter fans including Heidi8, Ebony, Jana, Al, Yael Pou, John Walton, Viola, and Rave. [2]
- During March 2001, Heidi was still involved in writing fan fiction. Her disclaimers which date from this time are as follows:
- Disclaimer: The characters in this section all belong to JK Rowling, but if her people want to come after me, I can defend myself under both New York and Florida law. Almost the entirety of this work is from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, but the copyright's expired on her work, so there is no copyright infringement. Consider it an homage, not plagiarism! [4]
These disclaimers are found on her works posted to HP_Paradise. Of interest, when Heidi finally posted her stories to FictionAlley on July 16, 2001, these disclaimers were not found on her stories. They had been changed. They also go against fan fiction tradition. The community generally included disclaimers as an ethical obligation, knowing that, as a community, the community was largely poaching and stealing from others. Given this, the least the community could do is respond ethically to requests to stop, not cite legal reasons why they should be allowed to poach.
- On April 17, 2001, Heidi had a biography that she wrote for herself for the HP_Paradise list which was uploaded to the file section. It described herself as:
- Heidi Tandy is a thirtysomething lawyer in Florida, and has earned her HP Fanfic stripes beta-reading for Cassandra Claire, Ebony (aka AngieJ), Penny & Carole and Rhysenn. Somewhere around practicing law and raising her 18 month old son Harry, she finds time to write *A Surfeit of Curses* (SoC)- that explains why a chapter a month is about all she can do...
- In SoC, what begins with Draco coming back to Malfoy Manor after the end of 4th year swirls into a series of flashbacks, a visit with Hermione Granger in search of Rita Skeeter, and a surprise discovery in Diagon Alley. Heidi is also the author of a Rowling/Austen crossover series on ff.net, "Homage". [5]
- This is important because it demonstrates Heidi tying her occupation to her fannish identity. The two were not separate but one. It also goes to show who Heidi's fandom friends were. The quote also references her Homage. When these were published, it was widely known that these were basically copy and pastes of the original text with the names changed. Heidi's disclaimers said they were not plagiarism and her later comments justified this as not plagiarism as the works were in the public domain. This demonstrates a lack of understanding on Heidi's part as to what plagiarism is.
- On April 18, 2001, Heidi makes one of the earliest references to Schnoogle in a post to HP_Paradise. [6] In it, Heidi spelled out the purpose of site when she said "Okay, I am a little weirded out, yet pleased, that you're the first person who has read a story because of one of teh Schnoogle.com ship buttons! Yay! Our purpose has been achieved!" [7]
- During June 2001, the HP_Paradise mailing list saw its peak volume, with 549 posts made this month. [8]
- On July 16, 2001, Heidi's stories were archived on FictionAlley.Org. Heidi, like Cassandra Claire, was discovered to be a plagiarist in August 2006. The passage was posted to FictionAlley.Org on July 16, 2001. Below is an example of part she is found to have plagiarized:
- Never did Draco find anything so difficult as to keeping himself from losing his temper when he was suddenly disturbed while absorbed in a book. People who are fond of books know the feeling of irritation which sweeps over them at such a moment. "It makes me feel as if someone had hit me," he had said once. "And as if I want to hit back. I have to remember things quickly to keep from saying something ill-tempered." The temptation to be unreasonable and snappish is one not easy to manage, but around Lucius, it had to be done.
- A Surfeit of Curses, Heidi, Chapter 6 [9][10]
- Never did she find anything so difficult as to keep herself from losing her temper when she was suddenly disturbed while absorbed in a book. - The Little Princess, Francis Hodgson Burnett, Chapter 6 [11][12]
- The actual plagiarized passages were more extensive than this quote demonstrates. The passages also match with the files still archived on HP_Paradise that date back earlier.
- On July 23, 2001, the announcements regarding FictionAlley.Org continued. One of the posts these from this day was made to HP_Paradise mailing list by Ebony. [13] Another announcement was made on the Sirius_Black_and_Remus_Lupin mailing list. [14]
