Hate memes are a type of intenet meme which began appearing in late 2005. They were a way for people to criticize, out, or flame members of fandom anonymously so that those lobbing the accusations could do so without fear of retaliation for their words. Sometimes a general anon meme such as dw_anon would quickly degenerate into a hate meme.

These memes were often fandom-specific, and found in such fan communities as Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Queer as Folk, Smallville, Stargate, Supernatural and Harry Potter. Hate memes were usually hosted on LiveJournal, or other LiveJournal clone sites, and were frequently removed from these sites for terms of service violations. They remain anonymous because the host of the hate meme (either in their own personal journal, or in one created just for the meme) turns IP logging off.

The general rule of hate memes is that only posts that are made non-anonymously are deleted. However, some hate memes, in order to prolong their shelf life, would delete comments that were likely to get them ToSed. Comments which would likely be deleted included posting pictures or personal information of people like Cassandra Claire, stories posted without permission, and fangirl RPF. Some of that material would be posted intentionally and then reported by the person who posted it, with the hope of getting the hate meme removed from LiveJournal.

[edit] History

In the spring 2009, there was a round of hate memes in LiveJournal fandom. That round involved "some personal trolling of a couple of fans, and it got so bad that a couple of people left the fandom)." [1]
