Help:Shipping
From Fan History Wiki
In the context of Fan History, Shipping refers to any fandom based pairing and the fanbase around the pairing.
New ship pages should be based off Template:Ship. The template can be modified as necessary to fit the pairing.
[edit] Shipping page names
The naming of ships for page titles and within text can present issues which users are asked to approach with their best judgement for what are the most widely accepted norms within a given fandom.
The most commonly used and widely recognized ship name should be used for the page about the ship. In general the "/" convention is considered the default in many fandoms (ex: Kirk/Spock in Star Trek) where the name order is more by convention than a statement on the particular relationship dynamics between the characters. In anime fandoms, other conventions may be more prevalent such as semi"/"uke or seme"x"uke and the order of the names may in fact imply different ship fandoms which both deserve separate entires. (ex: 1x2 and 2x1 in Gundam Wing). Some fandoms may also predominantly use portmanteaus or "smashed" names, although these can cause disambiguation issues if the names combine into a more common word (ex: Nuke, for the Noah/Luke pairing on As the World Turns). The use of "+" or "&" symbols may be prevalent in certain fandoms as well, although care should be taken in assuring these are in fact the defaults for romantic ships in these fandoms instead of friendship, as is often the case in many fandoms.
Once a pairing naming convention has been established within a fandom, other names for those pairings should either be listed based on Template:Term if they are frequently used, or simply redirected to the primary ship article. When using Template:Term, the pairing name should be in the See also section, and should follow the rules for category inclusion for other articles in the shipping category.
Example: Grissom/Sara is the most widely recognized name for this pairing. Gil/Sara, Sara/Grissom, Sara/Gil should all redirect to Grissom/Sara. Geek!Love should be based on Template:Term, put into Category:CSI terminology, Category:Grissom/Sara, Category:Sara Sidle and Category:Gil Grissom.
If there is debate over what is the norm for a particular fandom, it can be addressed on the Talk page for that fandom's shipping catetgory (ex: Category:CSI_pairings).
[edit] Shipping categories
Pairing pages should be put into three categories:
- Fandom pairing name category;
- Character categories using the full name of the characters for every character involved in the ship/pairing; and
- Ship/pairing name.
Example: Grissom/Sara would be in Category:CSI pairings, Category:Gil Grissom, Category:Sara Sidle and Category:Grissom/Sara.
[edit] Shipping category contents
The organization of shipping categories is flexible and largely depends on how many articles are in a category. If the shipping category has over 25 articles, more complex organization should be considered. If a shipping category has more than 25 articles, sub categories may need to be created. The following list contain some ideas for subcategories:
- Category:Ship fan fiction archives;
- Category:Ship fans;
- Category:Ship fansites;
- Category:Ship fanzines;
- Category:Ship LiveJournal communities;
- Category:Ship MySpace communities.
Articles in the shipping category should generally be included in the fandom based categories, where there is an expectation of more articles in the category and in the character based equivalent category.
Example: Jenbachand, a CSI Grissom/Sara shipper could and should go in Category:Sara Sidle, Category:Gil Grissom, Category:Grissom/Sara, Category:CSI fans and Category:People.
