Help:User page
From Fan History Wiki
[edit] Introduction
On Fan History, user pages serve several purposes. They include but are not limited to:
- Letting other contributors know about you and your interests;
- Supplementing the information about yourself by giving you the ability to write that information in the first person;
- Informing other contributors of any wiki projects you may be working on;
- A place to request other people to help you with projects you are working on;
- Letting other people know your biases and areas that you cannot work on as a result;
- Posting links to where you can be found elsewhere on the Internet;
- Sharing contact information;
- As a sandbox to test out formatting and content before putting it on the main name space;
- Listing recs for fan fiction, fan art and fan vids that you think others might like; or
- Promoting your self in the context of fandom.
[edit] Accessing your user page
If your username is Example:
- Your user page is the page at User:Example (or Special:Mypage)
- Your user talk page is the page at User talk:Example (or Special:Mytalk)
- Your user subpages are pages of the form User:Example/Recs (Special:Mypage/Recs) or User talk:Example/Recs (Special:Mytalk/Recs), and are listed at Special:Prefixindex/User:Example/ and Special:Prefixindex/User talk:Example/.
- Your user space is the collection of all the above.
Note: "Your" in this context means associated with you, not belonging to you.
The Special:Mypage and Special:Mytalk special pages will take each user to her or his own user and user talk pages, respectively. Others will not be able to find your user page using Special:Mypage, they will be able to visit it only by going to User:Example (for the example user).
If you would prefer not to have a user page, then it is recommended that you redirect it to your user talk page for the convenience of other editors.
[edit] Rules
There are several rules for user pages.
- You may not post links to sites that would hurt Fan History's search engine ranking;
- You cannot register and create a user page for the express purpose of promoting content that has no bearing on Fan History's content. Example: If you run a kitchen appliance store, you cannot register and create a user page with several links to the store and use your user page to advertise sales.
- You cannot use your userpage as a platform to attack others in the fan community.
- You cannot insert code on your user page which would interfere with the functioning of wiki.
[edit] Advice
The following contains a general list of advice regarding user pages and user subpages.
- You may post fan fiction to your user page or sub page that you have written. This is generally not advised because you would need to contact an administrator to remove it and Fan History was not created for this purpose.
- You may blog on your user page or on subpages. This is generally not advised because there are no easy ways to backup your content and Fan History was not created to be a fandom blogging service. Any content that violates our rules on the blog entry would also be subject to deletion.
[edit] Blanking user pages
You can blank your own user page and subpages. Doing so will not lead to any sort of banning or accusations of vandalism as your user page is generally yours to do with what you want. You may not blank other people's user pages.
[edit] Editing other people's user pages
Administrators will occasionally edit your user page. This is mostly done to put your user page into a category or to fix typos. Regular contributors should not be editing your user page with out your permission. If they do so, please contact and administrator who will look into the situation.
