[edit] Introduction

Draco/Hermione is the relationship between Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter books. This ship has the largest amount of fics and supporters on Fanfiction.net [citation needed]. It is considered by some to be a difficult relationship to write in the Harry Potter Fandom, since Draco Malfoy is prejudiced against Muggle-borns and Hermione is a muggle-born. However, like fans of other "Rival ships" (such as Draco/Harry, Snape/Hermione, or Snape/Harry), its fans enjoy writing about opposing, contrasting characters falling in love.

[edit] Tropes

Below is a list of common tropes in Draco/Hermione fanfiction.

  • In pre-Deathly Hallows fanfiction, Draco and Hermione were sometimes made Head Boy and Head Girl, often with adjoining or shared bedrooms, and especially a shared bathroom. This would lead to romantic-comedy situations and eventual romance.
  • Subversion of the Snape/Hermione Marriage Law Challenge: in some fics the Ministry for Magic would decree that all Purebloods must marry Muggleborns in order to preserve the wizarding race. Due to some kind of circumstance (either through the law or Hermione's stubbornnness), Hermione would be forced to marry Draco, leading to eventual romance.
  • In some fanfiction, generally dystopic futures after Voldemort won the war, Draco would be forced to claim Hermione as his concubine in order to keep her from being given as a slave to someone who would rape and torture her, leading to eventual romance.

[edit] Stories

[edit] Novel Length

  • "The Passion of Hate and Love" by Callisto Callispi Noted for its heart-wrenching romance and elaborate plot, Callisto Callispi's story was the first major work that ever explored the now-common plot device of what would happen if Draco and Hermione were to spend time in detention together. Status: Work in Progress.

  • "Future Parents Program" by Avari20 This story took the Draco/Hermione baby premise and expanded it to a whole new level. As one of her early works, it's clear that FPP was pre-beta days, but Avari20 doesn't disappoint. Draco's capacity for dry wit and snarkiness are exploited to the fullest, creating a story that is genuinely funny. Draco's mother and Dumbledore create the Future Parents Program, an experimental course that is to teach students vital aspects of daily life through parenting a 'real' baby. Draco and Hermione are paired, and throughout the story we are entertained by their mishaps coupled with that of Harry, Ron, Luna, Pansy, and Neville. Complete.

  • "Adamo Fidelitas" by Pixiezombie 'Potions Gone Wrong' is one of the most conventional plot devices within the ship, and Pixiezombie's fresh spin on this devise is one of the most frequently cited examples. Status as of 1/6/07: Work in Progress.

  • "Draco Malfoy, the Amazing Bouncing... Rat?" by Maya The comic potential of D/Hr is given free reign here with Hermione Granger cast as the straight man to an over-the-top version of Draco Malfoy. The ever popular potion making mistake plot devise is delivered with an amusing twist. Complete.

  • "A Dowry of a Single Galleon" by Krissy shares lineage with the Marriage Law challenge (arranged marriage) that cleverly exploits the portrayal of wizard culture from the novels and films with conventional plot devices (marriage contract, dowry, trial marriage, virgin bride) from historical romance. Complete.

  • "The God of the Lost" by Gravidy Widely acknowledged as one of the best novel length stories attempted in the ship, Gravidy's work in GoTL is distinguished by the hyper-realism of her depiction of racism in the wizard world and by her perspective on house politics at Hogwarts. Status as of 15/10/08: Work in Progress.

  • "The Dragon's Bride" by Rizzle This epic love story may have a cliche premise, but the author puts a fresh spin on the plot. Summary: 7th year. Draco and Hermione awaken in a Muggle hotel room, naked, hung-over and tattooed. They also happen to be married. Thus begin a desperate search for a solution to their sticky situation. After all, who in their right mind would want to be married to Draco Malfoy? Surely not Hermione… Written in response to the challenge issued by ‘Piaa’. Complete.

[edit] One-shots, Short Stories

  • "Lights Out" by Kphoebe, "As Beautiful As Days Can Be" Recognized as one of the fanfics that popularized the pairing, Lights Out is widely recced in the fandom for its spot-on characterization and the realistic take on its dynamics of Draco and Hermione. Draco's POV.
