As the sole female member of the Trio, Hermione Jean Granger is a much-discussed character in fandom. She is canonically married to Ron Weasley (with whom she had two children with, Rose and Hugo Weasley), but there is a large population of the Harry Potter fandom who prefer her to be together with Harry (see Harry/Hermione) or Draco Malfoy (see Draco/Hermione). In Femslash, Hermione is often slashed with Ginny Weasley and Luna Lovegood.

Besides being a catalyst for shipping wars, Hermione is often written in fanfics as a Mary Sue, resulting in battles over her character.

ROMANCE PAIRINGS: Ron and Hermione have plenty of potential -- lots
of sexual tension in that relationship. I think
there's a possibility for Harry and Ginny, although I'm not sure she
is developed enough as a character yet for any of us to think
she's quite right for him. She had such a small role in POA. It will
be interesting to see how that turns out. She could develop
into a character that we will all think is worthy of Harry's romantic
partner. For now, I don't see any of the females currently in
the cast as being quite "up to snuff" (I think Hermione is better with
Ron so I've discounted her) [1]
Finally, for those who just can't stand the wait between Rowling's books, there are Harry Potter role-playing games and a growing body of fan-written Harry Potter fiction on the Web, much of it intended for adults. If the tentative rumblings of pubescent romance aren't strong enough for your tastes, there's "Harry Potter and the Paradigm of Uncertainty," a story in progress to be found at eGroups. Author Lori Summers describes it as "a PG-13 story intended for adult fans of the HP series. It's set 9 years after Hogwarts graduation."
In Summer's story, Hermione has become a beleaguered academic sharing a large house with several other young witches and wizards, Harry Potter included, and recovering from a yearlong romance with Ron, who has been murdered by Voldemort. In the long tradition of "shipper" fan-fiction (in which fans imagine romantic relationships between fictional characters from books, TV and movies), this tale concerns itself with the complicated and often painful romantic tension between Hermione and Harry. It's a strangely prescient-seeming work, though not, as Summers stresses, recommended for children -- or for those who relish Rowling's books specifically because the characters don't resemble angst-ridden grad students. [2]

[edit] 2001

  • In 2001, Hermione’s name begins to be shortened to Hr instead of H in order to differentiate her name in referring to pairings like H/D. This related to the change in the fandom as it became more slash centric. H/D no longer worked as it could mean Hermione or Harry. (Cindelius: [3])
  • On February 17, 2001, Cassandra Claire made the following post to HPforGrownUps:
I would MUCH rather see Hermione end up with Draco than with Ron, as long as Draco mends his ways a bit (I don't want him to be "nice" either.) On alternate days, I would rather see Hermione wind up with Draco than with Harry. (A fact which affords Lori much pain, I am aware.) Ron/Hermione actively squicks me, Ron/Harry just puzzles me, and as for Ron/Draco...what CAN they be thinking?
...I don't think this necessarily means that I don't like Ron, which is an accusation often leveled at us H/H types...I like him okay. I just don't like him with Hermione. However, if the books do tend that way, I will survive. After all, Little Women is still one of my favorite childhood books, even though I have never forgiven Louisa May Alcott for what she did to Jo and Laurie -- a horrendous mistake IMHO. [4][5]
This is somewhat of importance as Cassandra Claire is generally associated with either Harry/Hermione or Harry/Draco. Many people forget that, for a time, Cassandra Claire was actively dabbling in the Hermione/Draco ship, a pairing she shared with Heidi.
Comparing the size of various ships on LiveJournal for the Harry Potter fandom: Snape/Hermione, Draco/Hermione, Hermione/Ginny, Ron/Hermione, Harry/Hermione.
