  • A/H or G/P - Arnold/Helga or Gerald/Phoebe, the two most common ships in the fandom. Other pairings are uncommon enough that fans will typically spell out the characters' names.
  • Boarders - A term assigned to those who posted on the Hey Arnold EZboard, chosen because of its frequent use on the show to describe the people who lived in Arnold's boarding house. The term is not used in the current fandom.

  • On October 7, 1996, Hey Arnold! premiered on television in the United States. [2]
  • Online fan discussion of Hey Arnold! was originally limited to the alt.tv.nickelodeon newsgroup and Nickelodeon's AOL site (keyword: nick). Discussion of the show on AOL's Nick message board and chat room led to the formation of a Hey Arnold club. The club began with approximately 20 fans as a mailing list with weekly newsletters. One of the members of the club, Phoebe1533, created a web page for it that eventually morphed into the Unofficial Hey Arnold! Site.

[edit] 1998

  • In May 1998, Don Del Grande's Hey Arnold! fansite was created. This website served as an encyclopeda of sorts for the show, with a comprehensive episode guide, full credits, and an frequently updated news feed. As the first Hey Arnold! fansite on the scene it received many e-mail contributions from fans, many of whom would go on to participate in the fandom's discussion boards. Some of the contributions were from people who worked on the show.
  • In June 1998, Hey Arnold! premiered on television in Sweden. [3]
  • On July 24, 1998, The Unofficial Hey Arnold! Site was created. This fansite hosted a Beseen message board and an applet-based chat room for fan discussion.
  • In Novemeber 1998, Craig Bartlett participated in the first of many interviews for the fandom. Fans submitted their questions to a moderator which were then e-mailed to Craig, and his responses were published on the Unofficial Hey Arnold! Site.[4] In the interview Craig discusses the future of Arnold and Helga, the location of Arnold's city, origins and inspirations behind the show, and behind-the-scenes details.
  • In December 1998, the fansite Gerald's Gateway of Tales was created. Fans at the time bypassed fanfiction.net and posted their fanfics at Gerald's Gateway. The fansite also hosted fan art, comics, and some of the first Hey Arnold! RPGs and ongoing stories.

[edit] 2007

One of my fandoms is the tiny Hey Arnold fandom. By far, the most popular genre there is het, followed by some gen, and then femslash. As far as boyslash goes, I've only ever seen ONE fic written, and even though it was very good, it sadly wasn't well-received. It's definitely the only fandom I've seen where femslash is waaay more popular than boyslash. I think this has a lot to do with the high number of male fans, whereas many fandoms are made up of mostly girls. Also, the female characters are somewhat more interesting than the males, in my opinion. [18]

[edit] 2009

[edit] Kerfluffles

  • The fandom circa 2000 had a general animosity toward Nickelodeon's newer TV shows and toward Rugrats in particular, which occassionally led to arguments within the fandom. Many fans felt that Rugrats' emergence as a pop culture success kept Hey Arnold! in a #2 spot it didn't deserve. This sentiment was further fueled by the lack of Hey Arnold merchandise during a time when Rugrats (and later, Spongebob Squarepants) merchandise was saturating retail stores. The animosity toward these programs has died down considerably in recent years and most fans today accept and even appreciate the quiet acclaim that Hey Arnold! received during its run.
