HoYay
From Fan History Wiki
HoYay or HoYay! is short for "Homoeroticism yay!" is a term used for accidental or intended homoerotic, or slash, subtext between two media characters who are otherwise perceived as heterosexual. The term is perhaps most widely used in Smallville fandom in relation to the CLex or Clark Kent/Lex Luthor relationship, which was seen as having a great deal of slash subtext particularly in the first season. The term was first popularized on the Television without Pity website before spreading into more common use around the internet.

[edit] History
- "Homoeroticism, Yay?" traces its roots back to the Angel forum of the Mighty Big TV website (which later became Television without Pity) during the show's first season (1999 - 2000). It was originally a play on a comment made on Buffy:The Vampire Slayer by the character Willow Rosenburg: "Vampires, yay?" It was the title of a popular thread on the forum, although it was used in conversations on the board before the thread began.[1]
- When Smallville premiered in the fall of 2001, use of the "Homoeroticism, Yay?" or HoYay term spread to the Smallville forum of Television without Pity, where it received more widespread useage and attention[2]--so much so that many believe the term originated in Smallville fandom whereas its roots are actually in Jossverse fandom.
- The term is now used throughout the Television without Pity forums, and elsewhere, in relationship to such fandoms as House[3], Heroes[4], and Friday Night Lights[5].
