Some believed the subtext in Smallville was so strong that it needed its own term: HoYay.

HoYay or HoYay! is short for "Homoeroticism yay!" is a term used for accidental or intended homoerotic, or slash, subtext between two media characters who are otherwise perceived as heterosexual. The term is perhaps most widely used in Smallville fandom in relation to the CLex or Clark Kent/Lex Luthor relationship, which was seen as having a great deal of slash subtext particularly in the first season. The term was first popularized on the Television without Pity website before spreading into more common use around the internet.

[edit] History

  • "Homoeroticism, Yay?" traces its roots back to the Angel forum of the Mighty Big TV website (which later became Television without Pity) during the show's first season (1999 - 2000). It was originally a play on a comment made on Buffy:The Vampire Slayer by the character Willow Rosenburg: "Vampires, yay?" It was the title of a popular thread on the forum, although it was used in conversations on the board before the thread began.[1]
