Ian Andreas Miller
From Fan History Wiki
Ian Andreas Miller is a webmaster, forum frequenter, and controversial figure in the Sailor Moon community. He has a long-standing reputation of being argumentative on Sailor Moon message forums and on his websites.[1]
In the late 1990s, Miller ran a website called "Sailormoon & The Planets" which compared the characters in the Sailor Moon series to Holst's famous suite. The site had a mixed reception and was later featured on "The Pit of the Month," a feature of The Witches 5 Underground Laboratory WPR.[2] While some fans recommended its inclusion on that page, others fondly regarded it. Tripod later "deleted the files" and the site wasn't reconstructed.[3]
In 2000, Miller created the website "DIES GAUDII." It has this stated purpose:
- "DIES GAUDII features articles that debunk those old misconceptions. It is hoped that those articles will give people a better understanding of the characters, story, and ideas that the original anime and manga exhibit. Not only do those articles debunk common misconceptions, but they also promote accurate information. Although it is interesting to see misinformation exposed and refuted, it is also fun and educational to know what information is correct. Most of the time, there is a right answer. The articles at DIES GAUDII will attempt to draw informed conclusions and present reasonable explanations even when there is no answer to a question or problem."[4]
Some fans believe Miller goes as far as suggesting that Sailor Moon creator Naoko Takeuchi and the anime staff made errors in their intended character names; Miller offers the "correct" and "intended" version of these names. Miller's detractors argue that Miller can't know what the creators "intended" when they wrote the names, and that he does not have the authority to say what is "correct." He has been criticized in places such as Fandom Wank for his depiction of fellow fansites and a perceived superiority complex.[5] Other sites and wiki projects, however, have referenced Miller's site as a source of English translations.[6][7]
"Hotaru-chan lover" and "Hotaru is cute" were previously used in his mailing list signatures.[8] Infamously a long-term fan of the pre-teen character Hotaru Tomoe,[9] he has been accused of having an obsessive, inappropriately sexual interest in the pre-teen character Hotaru Tomoe, particularly when depicted in bikinis.[10][11] He once ran a "Happy Birthday, Hotaru!" site that featured a several dozen fanart and doujinshi images of Hotaru in bikinis.[12] At times, he posted links to this gallery on mailing lists [13] [14] He acknowledged that his interest is not considered socially acceptable while he openly pursued it. For instance, he requested pictures of her in more adult costuming[15] and said:
- "She does appear more developed than I would expect a 12-year-old to be. (i.e., she has not only the breasts, but the more developed upper torso, and somewhat developed hips as well.)
- "(Of course, I could just be desperate to maintain that the SM character with whom I'm totally in love isn't THAT young...)"[16]
This article needs to dig up more archived examples of his fandom history, difficult since many message boards aren't fully archived. Google Groups search is a recommended resource for newsgroup involvement.
