[edit] Fan Fiction
On December 23, 2002, Ian McKellen said the following about Real Person Fic:
I am not well acquainted with slash but find nothing harmful in sharing fantasies about favourite characters or their interpreters. Within the context of such sites even Real Person stories seem unobjectionable as they are clearly fictional. - http://www.mckellen.com/epost/lotr/l021223.htm
The massive expansive growth of the Lord of the Rings real person fic started to wane by December of 2003. The community had its share of problems during this period, ones that those in traditional media fandoms would point to as reasons to discourage this type of fan fiction. This included a small percentage of the community thinking that the actors involved were really together and were sending their fans who were writing RPS secret messages, a fan working as a waitress giving Ian McKellen a sexually explicit story featuring him while Ian McKellen was eating lunch at a restaurant.
