InsaneJournal is a LiveJournal clone, often abbreviated as IJ, and while not as popular as LiveJournal or GreatestJournal, has over 260,000 journals and asylums (communities) (as of August 2008).

It is one of the options considered as an alternate journal service for exiled and angry fandom LiveJournal users following Strikethrough, LiveJournal's suspension of user accounts in May 2007. More users moved after LJ's sale to SUP.

Timeline

In early December 2007, LiveJournal announced that it had been acquired by SUP, a Russian blogging service. This led to another exodus of LiveJournal users to sites like GreatestJournal and InsaneJournal. The increased load was too much for GreatestJournal to handle, so they reduced their services and encouraged people to use InsaneJournal instead [4]. This led to a slow down in services at InsaneJournal. To accommodate the influx of users, IJ bought a new server [5].

On April 15, 2008, InsaneJournal was down for over 2 days due to a hosting problem. There was a lot of worry due to the fact that, at first, it was thought that over a month of data had been lost. Later is was found out that no data was lost. Some users were a bit unhappy about the downtime, but there was an overall sense of relief after the site was brought back online. [6]
