The Katara fanlisting describes Kutara as a strong, caring character:
Katara can be sweet and caring, comforting Aang when he is upset. She has a strong motherly instinct, often keeping the group on schedule, or warning them when their antics are going to cause trouble. Sometimes it helps hold them together, but it can also cause problems when the others feel she's being too overprotective. And she's no stranger to causing trouble herself, especially when she feels someone has been wronged. She's fiercely competitive and stubborn, and she's determined to do her part to fight with Aang in ending the war. Her waterbending skill is excellent, partly by nature and partly through hard work. Besides just fighting, she has the ability to heal wounds with water by manipulataing the body's 'chi'.[1]
