Led Zeppelin RPF/RPS is frequently cited as one of the earlier examples of this type of material. There is some question regarding its origins and start dates. People such as Sidewinder, a long time member of musician related fannish communities, have dated the material back to 1977. This information has been confirmed by one or more people on the LiveJournal community fanthropology and on the mailing list FCA-L. Their accounts of the origins of this material is more of a friend of a friend saw it during that time; that's how I heard about it. At the same time, other sources on the LiveJournal community fandomhistory cite Pamela Rose as one of the earliest writers of this material. When asked via e-mail, Pamela Rose said that this material actually dates to the mid to late 1980s. She said the following:

And the Tris and Alex characters were created by Nancy Arena. Nancy and myself worked together for a couple of years writing a novel with the characters of Tris and Alex which was loosely based on Jimmy and Robert, but Zeppelin was mostly used as a framework for the novel and the sidestories, and not at all real person slash.

What this means is that the dates of the earliest Led Zeppelin fannish fan fiction material are still unknown, subject to confirmation from another author who wrote it earlier or actual zine and story titles coming to light.

There was a Led Zeppelin listserv, known as Digital Graffiti, DG for short. It was around by 1996 and one of the members was Jean Lorrah.

Regarding that mailing list name, it was said:

The name of the Digital Graffiti listserv is ZEPPELIN-L. Standard listserv terminology is DESCRIPTION-L (L-for"List"), so SIMEGEN-L is entirely appropriate as the name of the Sime/Gen listserv--people stumbling across it who recognize the universe will immediately know what it's about, just as Led Zeppelin fans will recognize ZEPPELIN-L as something they might want to try.
