Letter from Exile One Merciful Morning is one of the first Snape/Hermione fics. It was posted to FanFiction.Net in December 2000, and described by the writer, Textualsphinx, as a 'fan-fanfiction', being an alternative ending to the very first Snape-Hermione story, Lupinlover's Beyond the Silver Rainbow. The story has been held responsible for inspiring the initial rash of Snape/Hermione stories. (See, for instance, JOdel's essay 'The good ship Snape and Granger' at Red Hen). Like Riley's Pawn to Queen, written a year later, it offered a feminist slant on the Harry Potter books, though proved less controversial with readers.
