  • On August 12, 2002, the LiveJournal community, badfic, was founded. The purpose of the community was to mock badfic and share horror stories from reading in the field. Members were also allowed to write their own badfic as a medium of discussing other badfic. By January of 2003, the community would be discussing Lion King fics. The story in question was posted to AdultFanFiction.Net. This was not the first time that bad Lion King fan fiction had been mocked. It had been brought up on GAFF several times during 1999 and 2000.

Disney originally claimed the story of the film was original and was influenced by a number of sources including Hamlet, in which the main character's father is murdered by his uncle who becomes king, also the father coming back as a ghost and the main character avenging his father's death; Bambi, an animated Disney film about animals in a realistic setting, which is also a coming of age story which features the death of a parent; and the stories of Joesph and Moses from The Bible. Many fans of the 1960s animie series, Kimba the White Lion, including the widow of Osamu Tezuka, the show's creator and Matthew Broadrick, who voiced Simba in the movie, thought it was little too much like 'Kimba', Disney claims they never heard of the it, this has been disputed for years.[citation needed]
