From Fan History Wiki

LitFic is generally considered to be fiction based on novels, novellas, and/or collections of short stories. It is frequently used to delineate Fan fiction based on the source material for popular movies, such as stories based directly on The Lord of the Rings as novelized by J. R. R. Tolkien versus Lord of the Rings (the movies) as produced by director Peter Jackson.

Unlike the moniker BookFic, LitFic is considered to a genre of its own and often encompasses pastiches as well as more traditional Fan fiction renditions.
