[edit] Introduction
This long-running show told the story of the 4077th MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital), a medical unit during the Korean War. It focused mainly on the doctors, nurses, and assorted others who worked there.
The series was developed for television by Larry Gelbart, and was adapted from the 1970 film of the same name (which in itself had been adapted from a novel by Richard Hooker). The TV show ran from 1972 to 1983 on CBS, tallying 251 episodes, and underwent numerous cast changes. Innovative in many ways, it continues to be considered one of the best-written series in the history of television, and earned numerous Emmys and other awards during the course of its run. It was also immensely popular with viewers and still holds the record for the most-watched episode of all-time, the 2.5-hour finale, "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen."
[edit] The Show
The primary characters are as follows.
Surgeons residing in the Swamp: Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce (entire run of the series); "Trapper" John McIntyre (seasons 1-3); Frank Burns (seasons 1-5); B.J. Hunnicutt (seasons 4-11); Charles Emerson Winchester III (seasons 6-11).
Commanding officers: Henry Blake (seasons 1-3); Sherman Potter (seasons 4-11).
Company clerks: Walter "Radar" O'Reilly (seasons 1-8); Maxwell Q. Klinger (entire run of series, first a medic, later co. clerk).
Head nurse: Margaret Houlihan (entire run of the series).
Priest: Francis John Patrick Mulcahy (entire run of series).
Although it could be argued that Hawkeye Pierce was the focus of the show, this was actually an ensemble piece, and viewers got to know all of the characters very well.
There is a great deal of fanfiction that pairs Hawkeye with Margaret, expanding on a romantic connection that happened briefly in canon ("Comrades in Arms"). There are also many fanfic writers who find fodder in the show's subtext and write slash stories, usually Hawkeye/Trapper or Hawkeye/B.J.
