Mai is one of the secondary characters of Avatar: The Last Airbender. She has been friends with Azula and Ty Lee since childhood. In Book 2, she joins with Azula to hunt Zuko and Aang. When Zuko switches sides, she forms a relationship with him.

Canonically, Mai has a relationship with Zuko, though he leaves her in episode 3-10, The Day of Black Sun, in order to pursue his destiny. At the end of the series, Sozin's Comet, they reunite and get back together with Zuko trying to, with difficulty, get on his robe for his coronation. Seemingly, their relationship is for good this time, with Mai stating "Don't ever break up with me again", Zuko smiles at her, giving indication that he agrees, the moment ends with a loving embrace.

Mai is at the centre of many kerfuffles, as opinion about her character is split within the Avatar community. Many claim she is a poorly written, boring or otherwise bad character, and her relationship with Zuko was also derided as poorly written. Mai's canon relationship competes directly with the most popular fanpairing, Zuko/Katara (Zutara), and ship wars between the two camps have raged since 3-1 when their relationship became official.
