[edit] Introduction
My Chemical Romance (often shortened to MCR or My Chem on-line)[1] has a large fandom that ranges from teens and preteens to adults. The band's popularity particularly exploded after the release of 2004's Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge.
[edit] Bandfic community
My Chemical Romance is a bandfic fandom that falls within the group of bands referenced with the exclusive use of "bandom", including both members of media fandom as well as those coming into it from other backgrounds or online sites such as MySpace and Quizzila. The My Chemical Romance slash community came into existence in the summer of 2004, "after 'I'm Not Okay(I promise)' started to get a lot of airplay, perhaps before that though".[2]
The My Chemical Romance fandom has a tremendous number of bandfic and related communities on services such as LiveJournal. Role-playing involving the band is also a popular activity on GreatestJournal. Please see the timeline below for more information on individual communities and their creation dates.
[edit] The Band
The band is from New Jersey. The original five members were Gerard Way, Mikey Way, Ray Toro, Matt Pelissier, and finally Frank Iero, who came in as backup guitar as they were recording the first cd. Later Matt Pelissier was replaced by Bob Bryar, who was a roadie for The Used beforehand. It has been said that this is because of a dispute between Ray Toro and Pelissier over mistakes Pelissier made during live performances.[citation needed]
