[edit] Introduction

On April 25, 2002, a notable Harry Potter role-play community called nocturne_alley moved to LiveJournal. This community was at its most popular during 2003. The game ended as scheduled on June 30, 2004.

[edit] Impact

Nocturne_alley's influence continues in other Harry Potter role-playing communities. The game has been credited with popularizing the first person journal form as opposed to third person prose posts; [1] some games specifically describe themselves as "Nocturne Alley style" or refer to the game when using this form. [2] The players of the game remained anonymous for the duration of the game, although some revealed their identities afterwards. This practice has also continued in many games.

[edit] Terminology

  • NA - short for "Nocturne Alley"
  • F5 - the keyboard command to refresh a webpage, commonly referenced by fans madly refreshing to see new comments and posts
  • MB and M.B. - short for Millicent Bulstrode
  • PS - short for potter_stinks (Draco Malfoy)
  • TBWL - The Boy Who Lived [3]
  • Bongo - see here
  • Google It, Sirius - an infamous comment made by Lucius Malfoy to Sirius Black [4]
  • I've Got a Theory - the NA's take on Buffy the Vampire Slayer's musical episode [5]

  • shiny - the infamous mood of Lucius Malfoy when he took too many of Narcissa's PMS pills
  • wibble - fan worrying and/or despair, such as nostalgic wibbling over missing the game [7] or wibbling over character fates. Fans of the game sometimes held "wibblechats" to wibble together. Also "wibble refresh repeat."

[edit] Pairings

The central romance was the slash relationship between Harry/Draco. The game thus attracted many fans of the pairing while also appealing to non-fans.

Other pairings represented, both unrequited and not:

  • Arthur/Molly
  • Ginny/Cho
  • Dean/Seamus
  • Dean/Terry
  • Hermione/Ernie
  • Lucius/Narcissa
  • Lucius/Snape
  • Millicent/Pansy
  • Remus/Sirius
  • Snape/Lupin
  • Snape/Lupin/Sirius
  • Snape/Sinistra

[edit] Fan community

Fans of nocturne_alley discussed the game in the nraged fan community, named after Draco Malfoy's habit of using the Livejournal mood "enraged." Many former game players participated in fan Q&A sessions after the game ended. NrAged members sometimes share nostalgia and highlight favorites among old posts. The stalled Historic Alley project helps fans locate these old posts. Some fans were also inspired to create their own games after NA ended.[8]
