Non con

[edit] Introduction
Non con is the shortened version of non-consensual and at it's most basic definition, refers to any sexual act in which the consent of one or both parties is suspect or not explicit.
As a term, it has a rather contentious existence, since in most cases non-consensual is equated with without consent which translates for many people as simply rape. However, unlike the term rape, Non con has no legal recognition in the justice system of the USA (although it may be used elsewhere).
For some people, non con can be used to describe situations similar to Aliens made us do it -- i.e. the actual participants in a sexual act may be influenced outside themselves, therefore leveling the charge of rape between the two characters is problematical, since in theory neither of them are actually consent. Fuck or Die is another example of where the consent issue may be murky. These cases, however, are now sometimes referred to as Dub con (for dubious consent) in some fandoms instead of Non con.
Rapefic is a well recognized (though not necessarily accepted) fantasy both in fandom and in the broader world. Non con skates that area between easily identifiable rape (wherein the object is not so much sex as power and control) and those areas wherein consent (or even lack of consent) is not clear. Issues of Consent would probably be a better label, but the use of non con seems pretty well entrenched in most fannish arenas.
[edit] Historical Definitions
The following definition dates to the Roswell fandom on June 27, 2001:
- non-con: contains non-consensual sex (see "hardcore") [1]
The following definition dates to March 2002 in the Gundam Wing fandom:
- Non-consent Situations: Basically this term is for fics that include situations, physical contact, etc. that has not been consented to by one or even both of the people involved. I will probably include both this term and rape for more serious situations (like forced sex). -_-' So if you don't like fics like that, stay away from them!! [2]
The following definition is for consensual and dates to January 2003:
- Consensual - A heading in adult fan fiction that says that all the parties that have sex in the fan fiction are consenting and want to have sex. This is as opposed to semi-consensual where consent is forced or a character is nudged but not outright forced into sex or otherwise having sex but not for reasons of their own (a character sleeping with someone to save someone's life for instance) and nonconsensual which says that one of the characters is raped (non consensual fanfiction is not allowed on this archive, btw) [3]
The following definition dates to September 2003 in the Kingdom Hearts fandom:
- Non-Con: Non-consensual sex (rape) [4]
The following term dates to 2005 in the Lord of the Rings fandom:
- Non Con - Also "NC". "non-consensual sexual intercourse," aka rape. [5]
The following definition dates to September 2006 in anime fandom:
- Non-con - non-consensual sex; Rarely is non-con used to describe rape. [6]
[edit] History
In June 2009, use of this term was criticized during Privilege!Fail. Critics of the term felt it was a way for some fans to pretty up the word rape, in order to justify their personal rape fantasies.
In June 2009, it was argued that there is the perception that some people use the terms non con and BDSM interchangeably. This causes confusion in fandom, especially in terms of discussions about triggers. [7]
