On April 11, 2000, [1] the ParadigmOfUncertainty mailing list was founded. This list, which has 15,321 members as of June 2005, was dedicated to fan fiction by Lori Summers, Penny Linsenmayer and Carole Estes and Cassandra Claire. It was, according to Ebony, originally founded Lori Summers for Lori Summers.[2] It was only later that Penny Linsenmayer and Carole Estes were added to the list of people the mailing list was dedicated to. [3] And it was after that when Cassandra Claire was added. [[4] ] This list saw its volume peak around October of 2000.

- Around March 2000, Penny Linsenmayer changed her ship preferences to Harry/Hermione, due to the influence of Lori Summers's Paradigm Of Uncertainty. [5]
- On April 11, 2000, the ParadigmOfUncertainty mailing list was founded. [6] According to Ebony, this mailing list was originally created by Lori Summers as a place for her to post her works and for people to discuss it. [7] It was only later that Penny Linsenmayer and Carole Estes were added to the list of people the mailing list was dedicated to. [8] And it was after that when Cassandra Claire was added. [9]
- On July 6, 2000, Salon.Com ran an article about Harry Potter. The article only briefly touched on fan fiction, but when it did, it was basically to plug Lori Summers's Paradigm of Uncertainty:
- Finally, for those who just can't stand the wait between Rowling's books, there are Harry Potter role-playing games and a growing body of fan-written Harry Potter fiction on the Web, much of it intended for adults. If the tentative rumblings of pubescent romance aren't strong enough for your tastes, there's "Harry Potter and the Paradigm of Uncertainty," a story in progress to be found at eGroups. Author Lori Summers describes it as "a PG-13 story intended for adult fans of the HP series. It's set 9 years after Hogwarts graduation."
- In Summer's story, Hermione has become a beleaguered academic sharing a large house with several other young witches and wizards, Harry Potter included, and recovering from a yearlong romance with Ron, who has been murdered by Voldemort. In the long tradition of "shipper" fan-fiction (in which fans imagine romantic relationships between fictional characters from books, TV and movies), this tale concerns itself with the complicated and often painful romantic tension between Hermione and Harry. It's a strangely prescient-seeming work, though not, as Summers stresses, recommended for children -- or for those who relish Rowling's books specifically because the characters don't resemble angst-ridden grad students. - The ship war of October 2000 led to ParadigmOfUncertainty, a mailing list which Cassandra Claire was affiliated with, having its most active month ever. [11]
- Cassandra Claire was still writing her epic story and actively publishing it. By this time, she had posted it to two mailing lists and FanFiction.Net. On December 18, 2000, Cassandra Claire posted chapter 9, part 1 of Draco Sinister on ParadigmOfUncertainty. It had the following disclaimer and author notes:
- Disclaimer: Not mine, JK's. There are quotes in here from Red Dwarf
- (back when it was funny), Blackadder, Buffy, and I realized I'd
- criminally neglected Terry Pratchett so far, so made up for it by
- nicking several quotes in this chapter at once.
- A/N There's a fair bit of telepathic communication in this story,
- which is indicated in italics. If you can, read it in Files, where
- the italics show up. Otherwise, I apologize if it's at all confusing. [12]
- This disclaimer is a bit important as Heidi and Cassandra Claire would later both claim that Cassandra Claire's disclaimers were both okay and properly done, citing the material correctly. This is the disclaimer for the chapter that eventually led to Cassandra Claire's black listing from FanFiction.Net for plagiarism.
- On December 22, 2000, Ebony made the following post to HPforGrownUps:

- This post goes to further emphasize the influence that key stories like Lori Summers's Paradigm of Uncertainty had on other authors and those authors' ship preferences during that era.
- On January 22, 2001, Cassandra Claire posted chapter 11 of Draco Sinister to ParadigmOfUncertainty. This chapter is important because it would come up as additional proof of Cassandra Claire's plagiarism in the discussion in June of 2001. The original version of the chapter includes no disclaimer, no indication that any material was borrowed. [14][15][16][17] This was the same disclaimers, or lack of disclaimers, found on FanFiction.Net. [18] These lines would come up later, in August 2005 and August 2006. The extent of the author notes for this chapter was "dedicated to Heidi, Rave, Pandora and Rhysenn" [19]
- On May 14, 2001, the Harry Potter fan fiction community that surrounded Cassandra Claire became aware that a thirteen year old author was plagiarizing Cassandra Claire on FanFiction.Net. Cassandra Claire's fans were appalled that some one would plagiarize Cassandra Claire. [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] Cassandra Claire's fans were leaving her reviews that could be construed as harassing because the author plagiarized their favorite author, Cassandra Claire. Cassandra Claire told the members of ParadigmOfUncertainty "I also agree with the people who say to give this kid a break -- she's only 13 -- and like I said, I'll deal with it. ;)" [29] and offered a "cookie" for one of the chapters for her stories. Cookies are short extracts of a story or chapter, designed to entice the reader to read the fic. Notice the behavior pattern: Cassandra Claire's fangirls were being extremely mean and harassing. Cassandra Claire was made aware of her fans' behavior. Rather than clearly tell them to stop, she offers one throw away line and then tries to make everyone feel better. This type of behavior foreshadows the events of Charity Wank where the fans are not told to back off and stop behaving badly. Interestingly, this would have been a good time for Cassandra Claire to discuss her own borrowing found in her stories as it made for a good parallel with the current situation.
- On May 31, 2001, the fact that Cassandra Claire was borrowing from other sources and not properly crediting them is not widely known. While she later she admits she did this, Cassandra Claire claimed that there was a sort of game with her readers. This is clearly not visible in posts like the one posted on this day on ParadigmOfUncertainty. In it, a note by Rachel Adams, the author mentions that she was talking to her brother on the phone about the story and had quoted a funny line from the story. Her brother told her that the line was really from Red Dwarf. The author doesn't quite see the Rimmer/Draco symmetry. Still, the author appreciated the references. [30] The context of the post makes it abundantly clear that the author was not aware of Cassandra Claire doing this prior to the phone conversation with her brother. This indicates that fandom at large was not aware of the game Cassandra Claire later claimed was being played, a game that Heidi also verified as going on.
- Around June 10, 2001, based on messages to ParadigmOfUncertainty list, Cassandra Claire was actively reading reviews she received from FanFiction.Net. On this particular day, Cassandra Claire was mocking someone who did not like Cassandra Claire quoting directly from the Christian bible. [31] This demonstrates that Cassandra Claire makes fun of her fans.
- Cassandra Claire posted on ParadigmOfUncertainty on July 22, 2001 to also announce the opening of Schnoogle.com and FictionAlley.Org.
- On October 4, 2001, chapter 2 of Draco Veritas was posted on Fiction Alley. [32] The original disclaimers, based on the version posted on October 5, 2001 to ParadigmOfUncertainty were:
