In a private e-mail dated March 30, 2001 to Michela Ecks, Piers Anthony said that he tolered fan fiction based on his material because if it helps writers to become better writers, it's a good thing and out of respect to his fans. The only stipulation was that fans not profit from fan fiction derived from his books.
