[edit] Introduction
Pink Floyd has had an active fan following since the band's early years in the 1960s. The fan-fiction community within this fandom is relatively small, however, predominantly active on-line from 2006 through the current day. The fan-fiction community is represented on RockFic as well as in several livejournal communities. The Pink Floyd fan-fiction is largely slash in nature.
[edit] The Band
Pink Floyd is a rock band from England which had existed through various line-up changes (and differing names) since 1964. Originally called Sigmus 6, Meggadeaths, Tea Set and The Abdabs. The first line-up under which the band became popular included Nick Mason on drums, Roger Waters on bass, Syd Barrett on guitar and vocals, and Rick Wright on keyboards. In August of 1967, they released The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, considered a landmark of psychedelic rock music. By the time the album was released, however, Barrett--who had been the band's primary songwriter up to this point--was in decline and becoming increasingly unpredictable in his behavior.
In January 1968, guitarist David Gilmour was brought in support Barrett until Syd was dismissed in April 1968. The band continued exploring various experimental and psychedelic rock avenues through the late 1960s and early 1970s, releasing A Saucerful of Secrets, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother, and in 1971 Echoes. By now their sound was moving more towards progressive rock, and their popularity would skyrocket with the release of 1973's Dark Side of the Moon, one of the most successful albums in music history. Wish You Were Here followed in 1975, tackling issues of loss and absence, and fueled by the band's uncertainty of where to go after the success of Dark Side.
In the later 1970s, Roger Waters would take an increasing role in dominating the direction of the band's work and sound, a subject of no small internal conflict within the Floyd. Animals was released in 1977, under criticism from some that the band's sound had little relevance in contrast to the growing punk music scene in England. In 1979, this would be followed by The Wall, a 2-disc concept album conceived of by Waters and dealing with many of his personal issues.
The Final Cut followed in 1983, but by now Rick Wright had left the band and tensions were extremely high between the remaining three members of the group. Waters announced in 1985 that he was departing the band. Mason and Gilmour began recording a new Floyd album in 1986, much to Waters' dismay. Legal battles would ensue over the right to use the name Pink Floyd. The matter was settled out of court, and A Momentary Lapse of Reason was released by Mason and Gilmour - as Pink Floyd - in 1987.
By 1994, Wright had been reinstated into the band and The Division Bell released. The band had always been known for their live concerts and this last (for now) Floyd tour was no exception. Waters had, in the meantime, recorded several solo albums and continued touring through the late 1980s and 1990s.
On July 2, 2005, Waters reunited with the other band mates for a one-off appearance at the Live8 concert. The appearance reignited interest in the band for many, though whether they will ever reunite for a longer appearance or tour is uncertain.
