[edit] Introduction

PopSlash is a type of Real Person Fiction centered largely around slash involving the boybands which became a highly popular phenomenon in the 1990s. It may also include other pop, rap, and even country performers who had links to the main acts, who were generally considered to be Backstreet Boys and Nsync.

PopSlash is generally viewed as a subset of media fandom because many of the people who popularized it came out of media fandom. They helped define the community and its practices in a way that differed from traditional bandoms, including those which existed separately in other fan communities for these specific bands. Because PopSlash sprang largely out of media fandom communities where RPF was viewed negatively, there was a great deal of controversy about it at conventions and other venues for media fen in the early 2000s, and before LOTRiPS, PopSlash was the largest RPF fandom to gain widespread popularity in media fandom.
