Pride and Prejudice is a novel written by Jane Austen (born 16 December 1775 - died 18 July 1817). She was the seventh of eight children of Reverend George Austen and his wife, Cassandra. She is considered one of the most influential English writers of the early 19th century.

- Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam = in canon, Colonel Fitzwilliam has no first name, but a large number of fanfics have named him Richard.
- Colonel Studmuffin = often used to refer to Colonel Fitzwilliam, maternal cousin to Darcy.
- Earl of Matlock = in canon, Darcy's uncle is an Earl, or "Lord ----", but a large number of fanfics have titled him the Earl of Matlock, which is a real town in Derbyshire
- DWG = Derbyshire Writers Guild, fanfic section at austen.com, a JA site
- FF.net = fanfiction.net, which has a section for JA fics. (from Books, select Jane Austen)
- HG = Hyacinth Gardens, a Jane Austen fanfic community at hyacinthgardens.com
- JA = Jane Austen
- L&D purist, E&D purist = a fan who prefers that Lizzy and Darcy end up happily together by story-end
- Lady Cat = abbreviation for Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Darcy's maternal aunt.
- MDS = abbreviation for Mrs. Darcy's Story Site, a P&P related fanfiction site at mrsdarcy.com
- MP = Mansfield Park
- Mr. Thomas Bennet = in canon, Mr. Bennet has no first name, but a large number of fanfics have named him Thomas.
- Mrs. Frances "Fanny" Gardiner Bennet = in canon, Mrs. Bennet has no first name, but a large number of fanfics have named her Frances, often shortened to Fanny.
- Mrs. Madeline Gardiner = in canon, Lizzy Bennet's aunt is "M. Gardiner," but a large number of fanfics have named her Madeline.
- NA = Northanger Abbey
- PP, P&P = Pride and Prejudice
- RoP = Republic of Pemberley, official name of pemberley.com site with fanfic and JA-related discussion; parent site of Bits of Ivory
- SS, S&S = Sense and Sensibility
Movie abbreviations:
- PP0 = movie (1940) with Laurence Olivier, Greer Garson.
- PP1 = BBC mini-series (1980) with David Rintoul, Elizabeth Garvie.
- PP2 = BBC/AETV mini-series (1995) with Colin Firth, Jennifer Ehle. This was widely watched and caused a tremendous growth in related fanfic; also boosted Firth's career and image as romantic hero.
- P&P Utah or Mormon P&P = P&P: A Latter Day Comedy (2003)Kam Heskin, Orlando Seale. A modern version produced by Excel Entertainment Group.
- B&P = Bride and Prejudice (2004), the Bollywood modern take on PP
- PP3 or PP2005 = movie (2005) with Matthew Macfadyen, Keira Knightley.

- From 1920 to 1930, Jane Austen fans began to write their own stories based on her characters and to distribute those stories in fanzines. (Jenkins)

- In 1995, BBC aired a new miniseries of Pride and Prejudice, which was in fact the second such miniseries made for the network, though the first one is not as well known. (imacartwright, [1])

- On July 3, 1999, the Pride and Prejudice mailing list theprideandprejudiceclub [2] was created.

- On July 23, 2001, the LiveJournal community pridenprejudice was created. [3]

- Hyacinth Gardens was founded on February 8, 2002, and has over 3,200 members worldwide (adults only) as of January 15, 2007. Fanfic encompasses all JA novels and characters and general discussion.
- DarcyFic, a Yahoo mailing list dedicated to the distribution of Darcy-centered fan fiction, was founded on February 15, 2002.
- On March 21, 2002, Firthness.com was born as an adjunct of the now defunct justduckies site. This site was dedicated to the character of Darcy, though it has expanded to all Austen fan fiction over the years.

- Mrs. Darcy's Story Site started out in 2004 as a mini-library for the P&P fanfiction of a small group of friends. Apart from the circle of authors (that has expanded considerably through the years), Mrs. Darcy focuses on Jane Austen related news and articles, special features, book reviews, and there's a store.
- On February 8, 2008, the LiveJournal community pandp_anonymous was created. [4]
