[edit] Introduction
Princess Tutu is a shoujo or magical-girl anime based in a world of ballet and stories that turn into reality, specifically set in an alternate 18th century(?) Germany. Created and designed by Ikuko Itoh, the 26-episode series revolves around Ahiru (or Duck in the English version), a thirteen-year-old ballet student who becomes the prima ballerina Princess Tutu in order to restore the pieces of the prince's heart. In time, Ahiru even comes to realize that she is indeed a duck (hence the name) and that Drosselmeyer granted her the power to turn into a girl through a pendant.
As her challenges continue, Ahiru comes to meet several key characters that each resemble, uncannily, roles from the book "The Prince and the Raven": a ruthless Princess Kraehe, a cold knight that struggles with his destiny, and others. This books turns out to be a source of mystery, as Drosselmeyer never finished it -- instead, he died in the middle of writing it. The story is still spinning even after his death, however, and thus the characters must learn to either accept fate or defy it...
Princess Tutu has been voted "Masterpiece" 142 times and "Excellent" 166 times (out of a total of 509 votes) on the Anime News Network site. The series completed its broadcast in Japan on May 23rd, 2003, and is now licensed and owned by ADV Films in the United States.
Princess Tutu was also adapted into a manga version by Mizuo Shinonome, though it is not as acclaimed.

[edit] Ballet/Canon Terms
Note that the only ballet terms POSSIBLY required to be known in order to comprehend Princess Tutu are "pas de deux".
- pas de deux is a dance in ballet in which two partners perform steps together.
- pointe shoes are specialized ballet shoes in which advanced and extended movements may be preformed (pointework) on the edge/tips of the toes. They are usually worn by ballerinas only (though men may use them to preform female parts on occasion).
- prima ballerina is a leading female ballet dancer in a ballet company or performance.
- Prima donna means "first lady" and refers to the leading woman in an opera house OR it means someone egotistical yet generally unable to go without. Kraehe/Rue calls herself this to Princess Tutu in episode 10: [i]"Whatever I want, I take by force!"[/i]
- The Prince and the Raven is the book Drosselmeyer wrote that was never finished, yet somehow came to life after Drosselmeyer died. It is the backdrop upon which Ahiru must struggle: to escape the destiny Drosselmeyer has set aside.
[edit] Pairings
- Fakiru is a term that describes the fandom pairing of Fakir and Ahiru.
- Fakirue or Fakrue is a term that describes the pairing of Fakir and Rue. Not to be confused with Fakiru.
- Autorue is a term for the pairing of Autor and Rue.
- Ruetho is a term for the pairing of Mytho and Rue.
- Ahirue is a term for the pairing of Ahiru and Rue.
[edit] Other Terminology
- Scary Shiny Glasses is a pet name for Autor, referencing his tendency to push up his glasses in the anime so as they glare in the light. Most likely coined by haleysings.
- Sir Pantless or Pantless Wonder or Prince No Pants is a less-than-nice nickname for Mytho, as often in the anime he is seen without pants (conveniently placed censorship prevails in these instances). There's countless variations to this nickname.
- Kra-Hey-Hey is another nickname for Rue's alter-ego/evil Magical Girl transformation Princess Kraehe, originating from a voice actor on the Tutu DVD commentaries.

[edit] Kerfluffles
It is notable to point out here that at the current time, no Princess Tutu Kerfluffles have been recorded. That is to say, no wars, flames, wank, trolls, high accounts of Mary-Sue/Gary-Sue, etc. At most, there have been some minor disagreements between Mytho/Ahiru fans and Fakir/Ahiru fans, as well as between Mytho/Fakir fans and Mytho/Rue and Fakir/Ahiru fans.
