[edit] Introduction

Pseucide is a term created out of the combined words "pseudonym" and "suicide" that describes a fake death or a death of a sock puppet.

People commit pseucide for a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to, garnering sympathy and/or physical goods and money, distancing themselves from their past, or freeing themselves from responsibility.

[edit] Timeline

[edit] 1941

  • In 1941, Henry Peter Earl Singleton, a member of the Massachusetts science-fiction fandom and contributer to the fanzine "Fanfare" reportedly committed suicide; it was later discovered to be a hoax. Art Widner, who had been in the fandom with Singleton, wrote an article about the even in Noreascon Three Progress Report 1 in 1987, and uses the term "pseucide."[1]

[edit] 2007

  • In March of 2007, an announcement that Dampe, the creator of the 2-D version of Ocarina of Time, had been killed in a car accident was made by Joystiq.[2] However, most doubted the verity of this claim, and fen generally believe that Dampe simply didn't want to continue the project anymore and commited pseucide rather than dealing with the situation properly.[3]
