Fan fiction has been subject to legal concerns in the fandom. The following undated Geocities information gives a hint of it:

Due to a recent cease and desist order issued by MGM/UA regarding fan fiction we are unable to post Rat Patrol Fan Fiction. Until this situation changes (if it does) we would be very willing to post fiction about THE DESERT RATS -- four guys in jeeps who served in the the North Africa campaign. Their names were Sgt Troy Samson, Sgt Jack Mophet and their drivers Pvt. "Cully" Culpepper and Pvt. Marcus Hatch. These four were often are pitted against Capt. Dieter Heinrich, a very honorable German. Should anyone download these stories and do a search and replace and later change the names to something else there is little we can do about it. [17]
