Introduction

Realms of Fantasy is a bi-monthly, professionally published magazine for fantasy-focused fiction, non-fiction and art. Many of the genre's most popular and well-regarded authors and artists have been published in the title throughout the years.

Publication history

  • Realms of Fantasy began publication in 1994.
  • On January 27, 2009, managing editor Laura Cleveland announced that Realms of Fantasy would stop publication after the April 2009 issue.[1] The closure was blamed on plummeting newsstand sales, a problem facing many print magazines at the time and particularly difficult for genre publications "shelved in the back of the bookstores".
  • In March 2009, SF Scope reported that Warren Lapine's Tir Na Nog Press had bought the title and it would not close, although a few issues might go missing before the new launch in July 2009. The fiction editorial staff was not to change.[2]

Fishboob Fail 09

When the cover of August 2009 issue of Realms of Fantasy was revealed at Readercon in July 2009, it caused considerable controversy involving both Race wank and Gender wank. The wank was given the name Fishboob Fail 09 by some, who were dismayed at the objectification of women in a publication with a largely female audience.
