[edit] Timeline in fandom
- On December 8, 2000, Draco Dormiens was plugged by Rhysenn in an off topic kind of way on FFN-Slashers-Unite. [1] Rhysenn was, by this time, a friend of Cassandra Claire and an active member of HPforGrownUps. She would later start a mailing list for her and Cassandra Claire's work and discussion of that work. Her post is important because it was the first time Cassandra Claire was mentioned on this list. She does not get another mention on FFN-Slashers-Unite until Rhysenn later plugs her new mailing list. This plug was also a bit weird as, at this time, Cassandra Claire's story was not slash and the list was specifically a slash mailing list.
- On January 22, 2001, Cassandra Claire posted chapter 11 of Draco Sinister to ParadigmOfUncertainty. This chapter is important because it would come up as additional proof of Cassandra Claire's plagiarism in the discussion in June of 2001. The original version of the chapter includes no disclaimer, no indication that any material was borrowed. [2][3][4][5] This was the same disclaimers, or lack of disclaimers, found on FanFiction.Net. [6] These lines would come up later, in August 2005 and August 2006. The extent of the author notes for this chapter was "dedicated to Heidi, Rave, Pandora and Rhysenn" [7]
- During early to mid 2001, Rhysenn was one of the most popular Harry/Draco writers in the Harry Potter fandom. This is evident by the amount of awards Rhysenn won that year for the HP Slash Awards. [8]
- On March 17, 2001, the mailing list, cassie_and_rhysenn, was founded. [9] This list was dedicated to the posting of and discussion of stories by Cassandra Claire and Rhysenn. The list saw its volume peak in October of 2001.
- On March 19, 2001, Rhysenn was busy plugging her new mailing list on such mailing lists as FFN-Slashers-Unite and hpslash. [10][11] Cassandra Claire was similarly plugging the list on mailing lists like HP_FanFiction. [12] It is also worth noting that Cassandra Claire's work, according to her plug post, definitely had slashy subtext by this time.
- On April 17, 2001, Heidi had a biography that she wrote for herself for the HP_Paradise list which was uploaded to the file section. It described herself as:
- Heidi Tandy is a thirtysomething lawyer in Florida, and has earned her HP Fanfic stripes beta-reading for Cassandra Claire, Ebony (aka AngieJ), Penny & Carole and Rhysenn. Somewhere around practicing law and raising her 18 month old son Harry, she finds time to write *A Surfeit of Curses* (SoC)- that explains why a chapter a month is about all she can do...
- In SoC, what begins with Draco coming back to Malfoy Manor after the end of 4th year swirls into a series of flashbacks, a visit with Hermione Granger in search of Rita Skeeter, and a surprise discovery in Diagon Alley. Heidi is also the author of a Rowling/Austen crossover series on ff.net, "Homage". [13]
- On June 8, 2001, Heidi made a post on the hpslash list which was perceived as an attempt to get slashers to join another mailing list to defend Cassandra Claire's slash writing. [14] The text of this e-mail is:
- re: OT: COMPLETLEY OUTRAGED!!!
- Punker wrote about Eliza's fanfic site:
- I am only posting this because all these things are on a public
- message board - (first, a note - Eliza is 14ish, and I don't even
- think she's online much these days because she's dealing with final
- exams, but...still....)
- Eliza has never made any secret that she is an anti-slash person -
- back around New Year's there was a long discussion on HP_Fanfiction
- about slash - people like Al, Rhysenn, Cassie, Minx and others chimed
- in on this issue, and Eliza eventually posted in response to this
- post from cassie:
- Cassie ponders about where to fit a / into DS.* My favorite pairing
- after Harry/Draco (which I really can't make work) is Remus/Sirius,
- and Sirius needs to marry Narcissa so H&D can stay related, and
- anyway, Remus has been turned, possibly permanently, into a big wolf.
- That leaves Ron, I guess, available for.....um.....well, we'll see.
- grins* The Ron/Draco knife-throwing scene I believe started out as a
- response to the Teenage Witches who asked for a scene with Ron and
- Draco where Draco starts taking off his clothes. They tend to ask for
- peculiar things, but then they are peculiar people. ;) (she also
- mentions Lucius-redemption in that post - it's an interesting little
- bit of history!)
- Eliza's response follows:
- From: "Eliza Diawna Snape"
- Date: Sat Dec 30, 2000 4:04 pm
- Subject: Re: [HP_FanFiction] Re: Draco sightings, Ron/Draco and
- Lucius M.
- >*Cassie ponders about where to fit a / into DS.
- Oh, please, Cassandra, don't do it. Trust me on this; you may think slash is
- perfectly accepted my most people, but, call me close-minded, I don't really
- care, I believe it's wrong. I'm not going to start preaching at you, and so
- far during this entire discussion I've stayed quiet about this, but if you
- add a slash, I'm going to stop reading DS, and take the story off my site.
- That's not a threat... I'm not trying to scare you into not thinking about
- it. Don't get me wrong, you can write what you like... but, even when the
- story is good, I have a very hard time getting myself to put it up. Thats
- one of the reasons you will NEVER find PoU on my site, not because I think
- its not a good story, but because of the ratings. Basically, if you add
- slash, you're going to offend a lot of people, including me.
- -Eliza, who is wondering how many people are going to start yelling at her
- for this.
- You can read a lot more on the thread by joining at
- http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HP_FanFiction/ if you want a little
- historical perspective on it. Believe me, flaming Eliza will get you
- nowhere. She thinks what she thinks - and at the moment, she's not
- changing it. Grr. However, DS is still up there, despite, well,
- hintiness in some of the more recent chapters of a ben/gareth thing.
- Oh well!
- The view at the time, on the hpslash (mailing list) mailing list, was that Heidi was trying to get people to rally to Cassandra Claire's defense and create a flame war between the slash and het contingents.
- On October 23 and October 24, 2001, Cassandra Claire posted to Fiction Alley Park about how much she hated Harry/Ginny fan fiction. [15][16] This post demonstrates her shipping preferences, the shipping preferences of her fan base and foreshadows larger conflicts that will happen between her group and Harry/Ginny fans that will occur in November 2001. Rhysenn, a member of the inner circle, also stepped in to agree with Cassandra Claire's shipping preferences. [17] Another participant in that discussion was Michelle Ravel, a Sugar Quill moderator. [18]
[edit] Rhysenn and Cassandra Claire
There has been some speculation that in addition to Aja, Stacey and IvyBlossom, Cassandra Claire had another favorite that predated these three women. That favorite was Rhysenn. If this theory is true, Rhysenn's involvement with Cassandra Claire existed by January 2001 as Rhysenn had plugged Cassandra Claire, was a character in her stories and was chatting with Cassandra Claire by this time. She would also later co-found a mailing featuring her and Cassandra Claire's work. During the whole plagiarism debacle, Rhysenn would be one of Cassandra Claire's biggest defenders. The major argument against Rhysenn being a favorite of the same sort as Aja, Stacey and IvyBlossom is that, during this period, there is little discussion of Cassandra Claire having any sort of symbiotic writing relationship with Rhysenn which was one of the most important characteristics of Cassandra Claire's relationships with her favorites.
