[edit] The Archivists

ScrewTheDaisies runs Rockfic.com and has been responsible for most of the site's programming and policies. Three other admins (Mad Andy, Hector_Rashbaum and Allana) and a number of long-standing moderators assist her in keeping the site running smoothly.

[edit] Archive Policies

The site has "Minimum Submission Standards" criteria that require that stories have few or no spelling, basic grammar or basic punctuation errors. Basic formatting rules are also applied to ensure readability. Stories by new authors are vetted by the admins or moderators before they can go "live" on the site. The vetting requirement is removed for any author who shows she/he can meet the minimum submissions standards on their own.

Access to Rockfic.com is restricted to ages 18 and over. This policy is strictly enforced.

Rockfic.com only accepts fiction about rock bands (real or "original").

Stories with explicit sex between a minor and a character more than 5 years older than the minor are not allowed. Stories with explicit sex involving anyone under 14 are not allowed.

[edit] Archive controversies

RockFic has been criticized on LiveJournal and Quizilla for its policies regarding the exclusion of minors from the site. It has also been criticized for charging $2 a year to gain access to the story database.

[edit] 2005

  • On Friday, January 7, 2005, it was discovered that all the fiction that user Angie79 had posted on the site was plagiarized from various authors in popslash, LotRPS, Harry Potter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and other fandoms. Angie79 had changed the names and some of the details to make them Guns N Roses or Motley Crue fics and claimed them as her own. It was also discovered that she had two sockpuppet accounts (Gino Di Luca and Rhys), that art she had posted as her own wasn't, and that even the dogs she claimed to own (and ask advice about the care of) actually belonged to a breeder in Ohio. Angie79 and her sock accounts were immediately banned and the authors of the plagiarized stories were notified.
  • On September 28, 2005, Rockfic.com became a subscription site, charging $2 for one year of access to the fiction archive or $20 for lifetime access. This was in response to the web server the site had been on repeatedly becoming slow or unavailable. The subscription fees were used to finance more reliable web hosting.
  • A Rockfic get-together was to be held in New Orleans November 11 - 14, but hurricane Katrina forced a change of plans. It was held in Asheville instead.

[edit] 2006

  • In March 2006, Rockfic Press was started as an offshoot of Rockfic. Rockfic Press publishes band fiction in trade paperback.

[edit] 2007

  • On March 27, 2007, a 48-hour free trial was implemented.
  • September 21-24, 2007 saw the second "Rockfic Asheville" get-together.

[edit] Archive Funding

The archive was initially funded out-of-pocket, but when the site made a move to more reliable (and expensive) hosting, a subscription fee of $2 for a year or $20 for a lifetime was initiated. The site began selling subscriptions in late September 2005.
