[edit] Biography

S.E. Hinton began writing in high school. She had completed two books before she began work on The Outsiders, when she was in her sophomore year at Will Rogers High School. She worked on it throughout most of 1965 and 1966, earning a D in creative writing her junior year, because she was so focused on the book.

A friend's mother took an interest in the book and sent it to an editor friend. The Outsiders was published by Viking in 1967, and it became the second-best-selling young-adult novel in publishing history, with more than eight million copies in print.

While attending the University of Tulsa, Hinton began work on her second novel. Four of her young adult novels have been adapted into films, two of them directed by Francis Ford Coppola (The Outsiders and Rumble Fish).
