Self-insert is a term used in fandom to describe fanfiction in which the author has written themself into. It's most popular form is when the author uses fanfic to put themselves into their favorite series, and interact with the characters. It is different from a Mary Sue in that the Self-insert resembles the author in all aspects and usually does not have any special powers.
