Shounen ai (which can also be spelled as shonen ai) is a Japanese term which translates into "boy love." In anime fandoms, this term was typically used to describe a fan work which featured male/male relationship that is not as explicit as yaoi.

The following term dates to February 2000 in anime fandom:

Shounen ai and shoujo ai are literally "boy love" and "girl love". Whereas yaoi and yuri is about sex, if not outright rape, shoujo/shounen ai is about love, emotions, and relationships. [1]

The following term dates to December 2001 in the Harry Potter fandom:

Shounen ai: A label found on fanfic, fanart and sometimes even site content as a warning. It means "boy love" or a focus on relationships between young boys. While sexual situations may be hinted at, it may not be as explicit as "yaoi".[2]

The following definition dates to March 2002 in the Gundam Wing fandom:

Shonen-ai Literally means "boy love". Usually just boys loving other boys, no sex involved, or just mild kissing, etc. It is a bit difficult to define this in relation to yaoi because they are similar, much like the terms lemon or lime. [3]

The following term dates to May 2003 in the Dragon Ball Z fandom:

YAOI/SHOUNEN AI
A type of fic implying boy to boy relationship. We don't write or read or host this kind too. But some people just do. Anyway, just for information sake, we're going to tell you about it. You can distinguish yaoi/shonen ai warnings from couples because instead of a slash (/) an X is put instead. So it would be GXV (GokuXVegeta) and the like.[4]

Shonen Ai: Anime fanfic term meaning male/male relationship. Translates as "boy love," but not on a sexual level. [6]

The following definition dates to September 2006 in anime fandom:

Shounen-ai (can be spelled as "shonen-ai" or "shounen-ai"; either is correct) is Japanese for "boy-love." Shounen-ai is exactly what it means; romance between boys. When this phrase pops up in fanfics, anime, or manga you can expect to find a very romantic story with little to no sexual content.[8]

Shonen-ai: Boy x boy love, bascially it means homosexuality. Usually has more plot and substance than yaoi, and is also a milder, 'aww' form. [10]
