[edit] Timeline
Below is a partial timeline of events that took place in this fan fiction community.
[edit] 1995
- On May 26, 1995, alt.tv.sliders was created. People regularly posted Sliders fan fiction to this Usenet group. [1]
- By September or October of 1995, the term betareader was being used in the Sliders fan fiction community on their big mailing list and on Usenet. (Wendy Perkins)
[edit] 1998
- In February 1998, Sci-Fi Entertainment ran an article by Melissa Perenson on fan fiction. It referenced the Sliders fan fiction community. An extract of a relevant section of the article says:
- There's also high-volume activity associated with Star Trek (referred to here as a aggregate for all four series, although currently Voyager seems to be leading to the greatest fanfic response ) and Lois and Clark: The New Adventure of Superman. But there are other, too: Star Wars, Babylon 5, Sliders, Xena, Dr. Who, Quantum Leap, Highlander, SeaQuest DSV, Beauty and the Beast - all of these popular science fiction and fantasy series have sites dedicated to the stories and characters of those universes.
- ...
- The efforts behind Sliders fanfic was inspired more by frustration with the series than anything else. "I stumbled across Slider and found as the show progressed that it wasn't living up to the potential the pilot demonstrated," says Kyrie Daniels, 25, who runs the two-year-old Sliders fanfic mailing list that has a couple hundred subscribers. "In fanfic, if we wish, we can ignore certain events that occurred, particularly in the last season. For Sliders, it helped a lot of the hard core fans through the long hiatuses the series s experienced." Plus, given Sliders' premise, fanfic takes on a particularly unique legitimacy. "With Sliders, it's likely happening in some other dimension just the way we're writing it."
