[edit] Introduction
Based on the Superman comics, this series follows teenage years and young adulthood of his alter-ego Clark Kent. In the universe of the television series, a meteor shower destroys much of the town of Smallville in October 1989; during the meteor fall, Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent find a small child of unusual powers in a spacecraft wreck in a cornfield. Another character whose destiny is impacted on this day is Lex Luthor, son of Lionel Luthor, whose future would be linked to Clark's from that day forward.
Following Clark Kent through his high school years, the series introduces us to his best friends Chloe Sullivan and Pete Ross, along with the girl of his dreams, Lana Lang, who originally only has eyes for football jock Whitney Fordman. The meteor shower has left a legacy of people impacted by the kryptonite which rained down on the town, and Clark stays busy trying to protect his friends, families, and others from those who are using their powers uncontrollably or to do evil.
Later seasons of the series introduce other characters from the Superman comics canon such as Lois Lane, Oliver Queen, and Jimmy Olsen.
Smallville fandom engages in the creation of a wide variety of fanworks, including fan-fiction, songvids, fan-art, fansites, and discussion forums. It is very active on LiveJournal but also on various messageboard communities including the pan-fandom Television without Pity and specific forums such as KryptonSite. With its large cast of recurring characters, complicated canon relationships, and perceived subtextual homoeroticism, the fandom has a great many shipping factions and much of the fanworks produced is ship-driven in nature, both slash and het.
