[edit] Introduction

Snape/Harry is a slash pairing in the Harry Potter fandom. This relationship is also called Snarry, which is a portmanteau of the characters' names.

[edit] Terminology

Below is a list of terms and their definitions that are used in this fan fiction community.

  • Slash: This is a term used in various fanfiction to refer to a male/male or homosexual pairing.
  • Mpreg: Short for 'male pregnancy', a concept invented for the slash fanfic world .
  • Snarry: A term used to refer to Harry Potter/Severus Snape pairing. Many ships in fandom have been given name, usually derived from mixing up the names of the two characters while still being recognizable. Initials can also be used, hence: HPSS also refers to Harry Potter/Severus Snape ship.
  • Ship: This term essentailly means a romantic pairing of two or more fanfic characters e.g. Harry Potter/Severus Snape (Snarry). It has evolved to include 'Shipper', referring to a person * OOC: 'Out Of Character'. This is usually used as a warning on a fic's summary to let the reader know that their fic has portrayed the characters in it as out of character i.e. not as their are portrayed in canon (in the original authors work). This can refer to the a non-canon pairing (although non-canon is usually used as the warning here), but mostly refers major behavioral/emotional in the characters that the reader may not be used to. This is therefore something that Snarry writers must attempt to address when writing their fics and often writers prefer to change elements of the characters all together to make the plot work therefore creating 'OOC' in their fics.

[edit] Having babies

The Harry Potter fan fiction community tends to not deal much with babies in the present timeline for most heterosexual pairings. Characters like Ron and Hermione might have children but only after they age to a time when they can give consent. In that case, the babies don't tend act as plot devises to bring characters together but to show a commitment as a couple, in a pre-existing relationship. The reader is generally left to understand that the pair is a given for the story, with out a back story needing to be established.

The exception to that is the Snape/Harry (Snarry) pairing. This pairing is frequently the subject of mpreg. It is frequently used in humor stories.

[edit] 2007

  • In August, due to a rumor that Yahoo!Groups was removing users who were lurking on mailing lists in this fandom, a number of mailing lists saw an increase in participation so that would not happen. While this rumor was not true, and Yahoo was only removing people who had e-mail accounts bouncing in excess of six months, it did not stop a certain level of hysteria.
  • By August 3, 2007, LiveJournal suspended two pornish pixies members for posting images of a Harry Potter characters who was a minor in a sexually explicit way. One piece of fan art featured an age ambiguous Harry Potter, aged between 14 and 20, giving oral sex or Snape, his 40 year old teacher.
