[edit] Introduction
Snape/Hermione is a popular Harry Potter pairing.
The first Snape-Hermione story, 'Beyond the Silver Rainbow' was written by Lupinlover and posted to ffnet in September 2000. A fic proposing an alternative ending to her story, 'Letter from Exile One Merciful Morning' (by Textualsphinx) popularised the ship with older readers and writers.
[edit] Terminology
Below is a list of terms and their definitions that are used in this fan fiction community.
- Dubcon refers to fan fiction which features stories where there are dubious consent issues.
[edit] Tropes
- In most Snape/Hermione fanfiction, Snape is a reclusive genius with Potions. Hermione is often thrust into his presence as a Potions Assistant, where she begins to realize how misunderstood and interesting he is. In these fics, the two bond over intellectualism and Muggle classic novels.
- Caused by the popular Pawn to Queen by Riley, in many fanfictions Snape was forced to claim Hermione as his slave in order to keep her from rape or torture.

Below is a partial timeline of events that took place in this fan fiction community.
[edit] 2001
- On September 28, 2001, the Snape/Hermione mailing list WhenIKissedTheTeacher (WIKTT) was founded. [1] It would eventually grow to become one of the largest mailing lists in Harry Potter fandom.
- By November 2001, Riley's Pawn to Queen was becoming extremely popular, and, with it, new fans joined the Snape/Hermione ship. Posting volume in December 2001 on WIKTT was approximately six times larger than it had been in November 2001. [2]

[edit] 2007
- In August, due to a rumor that Yahoo!Groups was removing users who were lurking on mailing lists in this fandom, a number of mailing lists saw an increase in participation so that would not happen. While this rumor was not true, and Yahoo was only removing people who had e-mail accounts bouncing in excess of six months, it did not stop a certain level of hysteria.
- On August 20, 2007, Selina Enriquez posted the following to WIKTT: "3) The artist community Shillusions.com is temporary frozen (you cannot upload images and you cannot delete them). People are suggesting that Shillusions.com is under investigation, because it contains a lot of Harry Potter adult art." [3] Shannon Prano commented later to say this was untrue, that the site was frozen, based on an August 10 announcement, because they were moving to a new server. [4]
- In December 2007, the domain for Playwitch.net expired and the site disappeared as a result. [5]

[edit] Influential fanworks
Letter from Exile One Merciful Morning is one of the first Snape/Hermione fics. It was posted to FanFiction.Net in December 2000, and described by the writer, Textualsphinx, as a 'fan-fanfiction', being an alternative ending to the very first Snape/Hermione story, Lupinlover's Beyond the Silver Rainbow. The story has been held responsible for inspiring the initial rash of Snape/Hermione stories. (See, for instance, Jodel's essay The good ship Snape and Granger at Red Hen.) Like Riley's Pawn to Queen, written a year later, it offered a feminist slant on the Harry Potter books, though proved less controversial with readers.
