The Sonic The Hedgehog games were Sega's answer to Nintendo's Mario. A popular and lucrative franchise, Sonic has starred in a variety of games on a variety of consols.

In the Sonic fandom there are a few types of canon: that of the games, the comics, and the cartoons are all separate canons. For example, Sally Acorn is a character that only exists in the comic canon and nothing else.

By September of 1996, the term beta reading was being used in this fan fiction community on the Usenet group alt.fan.sonic-hedgehog.

The Sonic Stadium website and message board was founded in 2000. [1]
