In the summer of 1997, the Usenet group Rec.Sport.Skating.Ice.Figure had a large flamewar. The flamewar was over what was suitable topics for discussion on the group. Things that people argued over the appropriateness of discussing included the skaters’s sexual orientation, abusive parents and coaches, drinking, drugging and eating disorders. ( [1] )

In 1998, SkateFic was founded. This site was dedicated to fan fiction based on figure skaters. That same year, Designs of Greatness, another figure skating real person fic site, was founded. It continued to be updated until 2003.

In 2005, a member of the fan fiction community recieved a cease and desist letter from Ohio State University for her NCAA Ohio State University women's basketball femslash. The fan was also kicked out of the Rebounders, the Ohio State University Buckeye's booster club. The university informed the NCAA of her actions. [2]
