[edit] Introduction
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (often abbreviated to ST:DS9 or DS9) is the third Star Trek series, and the second spin off of the original series. It is based around the crew and civilian population on an originally Cardassian space station orbiting the planet Bajor after it has been abandoned by its builders and given to Bajoran control at the end of the Cardassian occupation.
The series first aired in 1993 and ran until 1999 for a total of seven seasons. Unlike all other Trek series, its action primarily took place on a base in a fixed position where the events moved around the characters, as opposed to the more traditional format of a crew coming across new adventures as they explore space. It also had prominent plot arcs spanning several seasons, something also unusual in Star Trek. Additionally it tended to be darker in tone of story telling, and as a result of the plot arcs also more complex. One of the main reasons for this was that the shows creators didn't want to have more than one series based on a star ship running at the same time.[citation needed] These differences in format and tone, however, lead to some early criticism over whether the series truly fit Gene Roddenberry's philosophy and ideals for Star Trek.
The crew is reluctantly (if only initially) headed by Commander/Captain Benjamin Sisko, a human Starfleet officer believed by the Bajorans to be the Emissary of the Prophets. Under him serve various Starfleet and Bajoran Militia personnel whom viewers get to know over the seasons. Due the nature of the show's location, civilians such as bartenders, tailors, families, religious priests and others become well familiar figures, and major characters in and of themselves.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was not often considered as the best of all Star Trek series, and in fact until Star Trek: Enterprise premiered it was seen by many fans as the worst. Perhaps because of its drastic differences, opinions tend to be more polarised as to how good or bad the series was than has happened with the other Trek series. It also faced competition from Babylon 5 for some years, another show based on a space station and with even more complex plots.
That said, Deep Space Nine still produced a loyal following of its own and a full variety of associated fanworks. Various ships were embraced and promoted by some fans, both het and slash.
