[edit] Introduction

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (often abbreviated to ST:DS9 or DS9) is the third Star Trek series, and the second spin off of the original series. Based around the crew and civilian population on an originally Cardassian space station orbiting the planet Bajor after it has been abandoned by it's builders and given to Bajoran control at the end of the Cardassian occupation.

It first aired in 1993 and ran until 1999 with a total of seven seasons. Unlike all other Trek series, it's primarily based on base in a fixed position where the events move around the characters, as opposed to the more traditional format of the crew coming across new adventures as they explore. It also had more prominent plot arcs spanning several seasons; something also unusual in Star Trek. It also tended to be darker, and as a result of the plot arcs also more complex. One of the main reasons for this, was that the shows creators didn't want to have more than one series based on a star ship running at the same time.

The crew is reluctantly (if only initially) headed by Commander/Captain Benjamin Sisko, a human Starfleet officer believed by the Bajorans to be the Emissary of the Prophets. Under him serve various Starfleet and Bajoran Militia personnel whom we get to know over the seasons. Due the nature of the show's location, civilians such as bar tenders, tailors, families, religious priests and so on become well familiar figures to us, and major characters in and of themselves.

Not often seen as the best of all Star Trek series, until Star Trek: Enterprise premiered it was seen by many as the worst. Perhaps because of its drastic differences, opinions tend to be more polarised as to how good or bad it is than happens with the other series. It also faced competition from Babylon 5 for some years, another show based on a space station and with even more complex plots.
