[edit] Introduction
Stargate Atlantis (SGA) is a Canadian science fiction show that airs on the SciFi channel in the United States. The program was created in 2004 by Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper and is a spin-off of long-running program Stargate SG-1.
[edit] The Show
[edit] The story
Stargate Atlantis takes place in the city of Atlantis, on the planet "Lantea" in the Pegasus galaxy. Built by the most advanced race in the universe, the Ancients, the Ancients eventually submerged the city beneath the planet's ocean after a long war with an enemy race known as the Wraith.
Cut off from Earth, the Atlantis expedition team tries to uncover the secrets of the city while using the Stargate to explore the Pegasus Galaxy, seeking technology to help them defeat the Wraith.
[edit] Main characters
- John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan): A United States Air Force Major who becomes the commander of the Atlantis' military contingent after the original mission commander is killed.
- Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett): Member of Shepperd's team, a brilliant scientist and an expert on Ancient technology.
- Teyla Emmagan (Rachel Luttrell): Leader of the Athosians, a human race native to the Pegasus galaxy who joins the Atlantis team in order to fight the Wraith.
- 1st Lt. Aiden Ford (Rainbow Sun Francks): US Marine Corps lieutenant and member of Sheppard's team in season one of the series. He leaves the team (and the show) during season 2 after an overdose of Wraith feeding enzyme renders him mentally unstable.
- Dr. Elizabeth Weir (Torri Higginson): Initial leader of the Atlantis expedition, acting as a diplomat. Critically wounded in the third season finale, she becomes a recurring character in the fourth season.
- Carson Beckett, M. D. (Paul McGillion): Medical Chief of Atlantis in seasons 1-3. Killed in an explosion, a clone created by a rogue Wraith appears in seasons 4 and 5.
- Ronon Dex (Jason Momoa): A weapons specialist from the Pegasus planet Sateda who joins Sheppard's team in the second season of the series.
- Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping): Astrophysicist and former main character on Stargate: SG-1. Promoted to colonel, she joins the Atlantis team in Season 4 as she is given command of the Atlantis Expedition.
- Jennifer Keller (Jewel Staite): Replacement to Carson Beckett as Chief of Medicine.
- Richard Woolsey (Robert Picardo): Replaces Samantha Carter as commander of Atlantis in season 5, a representative of the International Oversight Advisory.
