[edit] Introduction
Stargate SG-1 is a long-running US television series originally based on the 1994 movie Stargate. There were minor canon changes between the movie and the series (for example, the name of Jack's son and the location of the planet Abydos); the fandom generally resolves such differences in favor of the series.
Stargate: SG-1 is a phenomenon in science fiction television becoming, as of 2006, the longest running television science fiction show in US history. While the cable channel, SciFi, chose not to renew their Stargate option after season 10 - much to the surprise of the cast and viewers - owners MGM reportedly valued the Stargate franchise as much as their enduringly successful James Bond property. Following the transmission of the remaining episodes, two straight-to-DVD movies were planned, and it has lead to two series to follow in the Stargate universe: Stargate Atlantis and the upcoming Stargate Universe.
The series enjoys wide popularity and a global fanbase. It has also generated a wealth of fanworks of all kinds and a dedicated and expert group of followers who have maintained contact and communication via online discussion boards since the series began. The series also enjoys a solid off-internet fandom, leading to a wealth of fanzines being produced and a large number of conventions. The Stargate cast regularly appear at conventions in locations such as the USA, UK, Australia and even as far-flung as New Zealand where they universally receive an enthusiastic welcome.
A MMPG "Stargate Worlds" in also currently in development.

- By season 9, airing in 2005 - 2006 and season 10, airing in 2006 - 2007, some of the fanbase believed that SG-1 was just hitting its stride after changes in the core cast. They noted that the introduction of new female character, Vala Mal Doran, breathed new life into the series, and that a season 11 and beyond should be produced. For this reason, they lobbied hard for MGM to find an alternative outlet to SciFi network for the series. The feasibility of making Stargate: SG-1 the first series to be made exclusively for on-demand web viewing had also been discussed.[citation needed]

[edit] FanLib
When FanLib was first launched in March 2007, parts of the Stargate community were very anti-FanLib as the Stargate fandom has a number of old school and acafen who felt that FanLib was a threat to traditional fandom ethics and to the existing power structure in fandom. Since August 2007, the anti-FanLib sentiment has largely been mooted with little continued discussion of the archive. With that vacuum, and the number of features that FanLib offers users, the Stargate fandom on FanLib began to grow.
