[edit] Fan fiction policy and history
Michela Ecks e-mailed Steven Brust on March 25, 2001 and asked for his policy regarding fan fiction derived from his original work. In a private e-mail to me dated the same day he replied with the following (extract from e-mail):
- > 1. Do you have a set policy regarding fan fiction derived from your
- > stories?
- No. I really don't know what the legalities are about that. I've been told that if I permit fan fiction, I may be giving up copyright to the characters. I'm not sure if that's true. In point of fact, the idea
- doesn't bother me, but, as its never come up, I haven't needed one.
- > 5. What are you general feelings on fan fiction? Do these feelings
- > differ when it is fan fiction based say on books versus television?
- To be honest, I don't get it. I can see being quite taken by a character, but I don't see why someone wouldn't rather create his own
- characters. But, really, I don't know enough about it have an informed opinion
