Supernatural kerfluffles

From Fan History Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Supernatural fandom has been through a large number of kerfluffles and has somewhat of a reputation as a "wanky" fandom. There seem to be a number of factors that contribute to this:

  • The popularity of incestfic and RPF within the fandom, which many other fans have strong objections to.
  • Conflicting ideas of fannish etiquette between younger fans for whom this is their "first fandom" and older fans who have expectations of behavior set by years of involvement in media fandom.
  • Intensly devoted fans of the two main actors, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who have at times engaged in behavior towards them which comes across as rude or obsessive to many.

This article summarizes some of the main kerfluffles which have occured, organizing them by type and date of occurence.

Misogyny in Supernatural

There have been a number of debates and lengthy discussions on LiveJournal regarding the treatment of female characters in Supernatural, and whether that makes the show (and its male lead characters) misogynistic. These discussions reached a particuarly heated point in May of 2008.[3], [4], [5], [6]

Fan outing

In January of 2009, there was an incident where a popular writer of Supernatural incestfic, dontyouwaitup, deleted her LiveJournal after apparently being outed to her friends and family through connections between her LiveJournal and Facebook pages. Much of the reporting of this incident occurred under "friendslock" in Supernatural fandom, and there was some debate as to what had actually happened, and if it wasn't just a dramatically staged flounce by dontyouwaitup.[8]

Fans vs. Danneel Harris

In some circles of Supernatural fandom - particularly ones very devoted to shipping Jensen and Jared, there is a great deal of hatred expressed towards Jensen Ackles girlfriend Danneel Harris. Rude comments have been made at and about her appearances with Jensen at conventions. When their engagement was announced, more upset followed, with some fans saying they could no longer write J2 or be part of the fandom as their fiction could no longer be a possible reality. Some fans even followed Danneel on Twitter and would remark on the perceived rudeness of how she referred to Jared as "the other one" in Tweets.[9]
