The Genesis Awards is a series of awards for fanfiction authors in the Final Fantasy VII fandom. The awards are for pieces of fiction that “show a certain standard of grammar and formatting, relevance to canon and characterisation.” [1] Although primarily created for Final Fantasy VII fanfiction, as of the 2009-2010 season, they are also accepting nominations from within the Final Fantasy X fandom.

[edit] Origin of 'Genesis'

The name 'Genesis Awards' was coined by Stradivari some time in 2006, taken from a biblical reference:

Genesis: (noun) Meaning the 'start', the 'origin', also the first book in the Old Testament that tells of the Creation.[2]

The name does not, as is popular belief, relate to the Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII character, Genesis.

[edit] History

The awards were originally devised by Stradivari, who based them on awards of a similar system, the Artemis Fowl fandom's Orion Awards.

The Genesis Awards have existed in one form or another since 2006. The first set of awards began in 2006, with Stradivari as the administrator, at the forums first incarnation on fanfiction.net [3]. At the end of 2006 when Stradivari left, adminship was handed over to Lily Silver, who ran the first set of awards from 2006 to 2008. In March 2007, during Lily Silver's administration, the forums were moved to a new home on ProBoards.com. [4]

In July 2008, the second set of awards began and were partially run by Pied Flycatcher, to whom Lily Silver handed her adminship on her leave of the awards in June of that year. Pied Flycatcher left the Genesis Awards in January 2009 and, after a brief contemplating period, handed her adminship to Woodster and Strange and Intoxicating -rsa-. At the same time, two other staff members, Lady Valtaya and Marilena, also left the awards. Two judges, Bianka-chan and T. Costa were chosen to take their places, and along with their fellow Shinra Executive, Sylla, assisted Woodster and Strange and Intoxicating -rsa- in running the awards. However, due to this unforseen loss of multiple judges, the awards deadline was pushed back to June for the 2008-2009 season.

After the three administrators left the awards, a reshuffling and restructuring took place. Among those was the design of a website, a move to a more secure forums server (launched in April 2009), and the introduction of a podcast, the Shinra News Network. These changes were spearheaded by the new administration.

The third set of awards began in June 2009, with two sets of awards: Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X. The Final Fantasy VII awards winners are due to be announced in June 2010 However, due to the lack of nominations and judge applications for the Final Fantasy X awards, nominations have been reopened until February 2010. This is to allow for additional judges to apply.

[edit] Awards

There have been three award seasons to date. Each award set starts with the nomination process, followed by preliminary reading. This screens the nominations for bad spelling and grammar. Once passing the preliminary reading, the remaining nominations are then judged by the a team of judges, who mark the nominations by a number of factors, including characterisation and canon consistency. The highest marked nominations from each category are then shortlisted, and discussion between the judges decides the winners.
