[edit] Introduction

Comedy team got their start in vaudeville in the 1920s. Orginaly comic foils for Ted Healy, the group consisting of brothers, Moe and Shemp Howard and violinist Larry Fine, left Healy's firm grip and broke out on their own. Shemp left and was replaced by Moe's other brother, Curly, who became a fan favorite. The group hit it big then they appeared in a series of comedy shorts produced by Columbia Pictures starting in 1934 with "Woman Haters", the group starred in 97 short film until 1946's Half Wit's Holiday, when Curly suffered a stroke and his failing health made him force to retire from showbiz and he died in 1952. Moe recruited Shemp to the new third member, but he too had health problems and died suddenly in 1955. The next year or so, the studio continued to make film using stock footage and stand-ins for recently deceased Shemp (called "Fake Shemps"). The following year, Joe Besser, an established comedy star took over for Shemp, his tenure in the group was very short lived and many fan refer to his films with the group as "Two Stooges with Joe Besser". Besser quit and was replaced by "Curly Joe" Derita. Moe, Larry and their new partner appeared in a series of feature films, stage shows, and an animated series which featured lived action wraparound segments. In 1970, they released their last film, a TV pilot called "Kook's Tour" which was never completed after Larry suffered a stroke. Since the 1950s, the Columbia era shorts have been stables on television and have made the group pouplar with children and young men.
